[0:08] welcome everybody the adult beverages are poured the babies are asleep and it is time for new dad gaming a show about gaming fatherhood and new fathers trying

[0:17] to figure out their gaming lives my name is Trevor and I have a four-month-old who’s not crying right now Gavin how are you doing my name is Gavin I have a

[0:26] two-month-old who is most certainly crying right now my name’s Jeff and my kids are silent at two and a half and 5 years

[0:35] old beautifully asleep I’m sure oh let’s no let’s just let’s let let that roll let that listen for a little bit let this uh let this go the

[0:48] my wife doing the bounce hush she’ll be hopefully I’m not gonna say when because I’ll just JX it if I you know acknowledge it but it seems like things

[0:58] are rela yeah you good y Mother’s Touch comes to the rescue amazing just a moment she’s just having a baby

[1:08] moment wonderful so gentlemen besides current crying how was your week in fatherhood and gaming uh fatherhood really good uh

[1:19] gaming very quiet uh both quiet actually nice um ex with the exception of 30 seconds ago but yeah no it’s it’s uh pretty good I’ve

[1:31] been just kind of working my way through a few games um mainly just like I I kind of want to get what console games I’m currently working on done and then I can

[1:42] uh when I I got a few that I I got lined up that I want to play that are coming out this fall so I want to try to you know clear my dance card so to

[1:51] speak so what what are those ones so I know you had been working through Dying Light which other the ones through that I think I’m pretty close to the end I

[1:58] think I’m near like it was one of the I think my next mission is to like just finish off the bad guy and uh Metro uh one of the two remakes or the remastered

[2:09] editions uh I’m just about done the first one and then uh I think once I’ve done those two larger titles I’ll probably put away on some uh kind of

[2:19] smaller bite-sized things uh like uh lost orbit or Super Time Force or some U lovers in a dangerous SpaceTime just some some smaller uh like independent

[2:30] titles that are just kind of fun you know do a level or two and then you’re like all right that was nice uh great great for like afternoon breaks and nap

[2:38] times nice so um and Jeff yourself you’re week in gaming and fatherhood um first well with fatherhood uh it was pretty quiet again um I did

[2:50] bring my oldest um to come vote because we have a new prime minister now in Canada so who did he vote for green part good yeah

[3:05] he voted for whatever color is his favorite yeah yeah not vote for that party but it was it was fun to bring him in and kind of teach them start you know

[3:16] getting them used to that social responsibility I guess yeah our little one was with us but I don’t she was we have her so cocooned for this

[3:26] windy weather that I think she saw the sky and then another ceiling that wasn’t hers and then sky and then ceiling again so same thing right that that’s really

[3:38] all I saw during the election too I didn’t even look I didn’t even I don’t know what happened um in terms of gaming uh Back

[3:47] to the Future day today so I I saw what you got today I res very jealous I’m actually like I have to get this game now I have to go and get Rocket League

[3:59] yeah you have to get it rocket League the DeLorean it’s awesome like they’ve the attention to detail is wicked if you Rocket Jump you Rocket Jump and fly the

[4:11] wheels turn in the sounds and if you somebody blows you up it’s the license plate that spins with the Flames oh so good you leave

[4:21] like the flame tracks behind you but is it like only if you’re at 88 No it should be it should be so you have to like fast or too slow you have to like

[4:32] hit the right speed and then that’s the only time it leaves a flame TR be keep at 88 all the time yeah but know it’s awesome and it has like the

[4:41] lightning stuff that comes back oh it’s not customizable but you don’t really need it no you don’t make the time machine like that’s that’s all you would

[4:50] customize a DeLorean to be that’s all you can customize a loran to be yeah it’s just done so right in the sense it’s a love letter to it like and it’s

[5:00] an aage like it’s not it so much feels like not a cash grab compared to I mean it’s a tiniest bit of a cash grab but in such a great way it’s relatively

[5:08] inexpensive and it’s just done so lovingly and so much attention to detail it’s like you tell their fans like wouldn’t it be cool if we were able to

[5:15] get this car into our game and then oh God we got the car in the game it’s amazing I think it’s because it’s an homage to something that has absolutely

[5:22] no relationship to the game whatsoever because if you look at the other sort of like oh I really want to skin my character to look that way you know if

[5:31] you look at the new Batman game that just came out um they have some like the the classic Tim Burton Batman outfit with the Batmobile and that and those

[5:39] are the things that are actually the only things that are really enticing me whatsoever to want to get the game it’s not the game itself it’s what I can do

[5:48] playing dress up and that factor but because it’s attached to the same IP it then feels more like a cash grab than with rocket League’s DeLorean

[6:00] because it’s just we love cars and this is the coolest car you know like if they had if they if I could also buy kit and like the General Lee oh that

[6:12] would be so good wow I know the General Lee is a touch a subject like I get it it’s not exactly painted in a very uh uh sensitive manner um but like I don’t

[6:24] even if they redid it is the far as a paint job I just want that particular car and that horn and that’s it like you can paint it with like just a pattern of

[6:33] roosters on the side now that would be great as long as it makes a sound and can jump over like a babbling cck then I’m I’m set no as long as I can change

[6:44] the announcer voice too well the player Gavin sure got himself in a travel again like that looks like he gone done hit that post see now that they man they

[6:54] did that with dodo recently where they had they had Rick and Morty Wicked and if you it is worth checking out on line it is absolutely hilarious

[7:04] like there’s so much in character like going back and forth like they’re trying to they’re bantering the one’s trying to calm down the other guy it’s just oh

[7:11] that’s amazing in many ways like you said g I guess in some ways it worked because it’s so out of the game itself like just comes in and it’s this

[7:20] curveball that’s I think that’s because you feel it’s it’s it’s them being banss and that’s the that’s the relationship that’s the Segway between their game and

[7:28] this content is their love you know it’s it’s not uh somebody’s idea for DLC um it’s somebody wanting to make it for the game and they’re like well we

[7:39] got to monetize somehow so we’ll just ask people for a couple bucks and call it a day um you know I I think that’s that’s I think maybe that’s the

[7:48] formula you know that or at least that’s the that’s the thing that will really help you see it as like yeah that’s some nice DLC I’m happy I got that I’m happy

[8:00] yeah honestly that man I have changed the stadiums have changed so when you score a goal there’s like one of the stadiums is redone it has the clock

[8:08] above the goal and when you score it spins and lightning hits it and it has the hover trains it’s wicked oh that’s so you had a good night

[8:16] I it’s I got back into it I just played it for that for you know an hour before I came online here so yeah yeah yeah so just quick diversion back to what you

[8:26] said the the one Batman actually kind of screwed me over cuz as part of the deal that I got with Origins is said like here’s all the skin packs it’s like oh

[8:33] this is sick there’s like 10 different ways to make Batman look that’d be hilarious to go the game that way they didn’t let they don’t let me do it the

[8:40] first time like you have to beat the game first unless I terribly misunderstood it or something broken you have to beat the game first game plus

[8:49] yeah you can so I have them like I I they’re installed as best and again I’m going to I half wish I’d research this before I I complain but see and that’s

[8:58] the thing that brings me back away from putting the game in a in my pocket and taking it home well buying it obviously not just shoplifting it but

[9:08] like that’s what keeps you from theft Batman the one thing that keeps me from theft is Batman um and my fear of Batman no I because I think it was uh oh the

[9:20] first Arkham Knight one this one’s Arkham is this Arkham Knight there’s Arkham Arkham City too many arh city that’s it I don’t know the one after

[9:28] Arkham Asylum like the first city one yep city city um that one had the outfit from the Frank Miller comic uh like grizzled old

[9:41] cranky like uh the Harrison Ford Batman kind of like I’m getting too old for this uh and that was the caution that I played most of it in because I’m like

[9:53] this is amazing I love that Frank Miller Batman just because he’s just he’s just a jerk great uh so and I think that one was a

[10:03] straight out like yeah go ahead you can switch your costumes I don’t I I don’t think the other ones had that issue until this new one where it’s like no

[10:10] it’s only for new game plus because you have play a game twice yeah I I feel like I’m G to triple check online because like it doesn’t feel

[10:21] right and if it is like man I I’m never I’m never playing that twice there’s no chance I’ll be I’ll be lucky to finish it one time with current like Dad hours

[10:31] but maybe maybe there’s like a Konami codee yeah yeah there you go some sort of code I could just beat up the Riddler would be is everything I need they put

[10:43] you and Ridler in the room and just let you go at it for like 10 minutes Mash X to punch face oh damn that guy but uh and jump start to jump

[10:53] now forward to what we were talking about um I play I did play rocket League this week after we got off yeah that’s right after we got off the

[11:02] episode last week it’s like is it I don’t know if you guys get this as well but it’s like this it’s a massive jump sometimes to get into the next game

[11:10] where it’s you don’t know what it is your time is limited baby could wake up any minute I don’t know if this game’s any good or if it’s like going to be any

[11:18] funny more like it sounds like it’s going to be great but maybe I don’t like it right and you have then you have to kind of learn some mechanics so man that

[11:26] first jump in can be so burdensome sometimes I in some ways it even kept me away from it but after this update came in after we talked last week and we just

[11:36] talked about backlog and a game I never played and then it’s also just time sensitive which we’ve mentioned as well this

[11:43] game it’s really it’s all the rage I hope it goes on to be popular for years but maybe by two years from now no one’s in lobby so yeah just had to do it pull

[11:51] the trigger and like damn it’s an awesome game what a great what a great day to start DeLoreans are flying all over the place it was amazing

[12:02] welcome Trevor welcome I have a strong feeling when we wind up having to get this game yeah it’s so easy to get to into like you just pick up and play and

[12:12] it’s so fun and it’s ridiculous like there just yeah it’s so it’s so Dad yeah like it’s got It’s so Dad sessionable it’s perfect in a sense that

[12:23] yeah if you have like the 5 minutes 10 minutes 15 while they’re sleeping totally pick it up get a couple games get out and the best part too is like

[12:30] the it’s pretty fluid and the one I was playing it as far as people kind of hopping in and hopping out for whatever reasons either they didn’t want to lose

[12:37] or connections whatever but just like so simple in that regard and then the mechanics after the first game big quick tip turn on ball follow mode that makes

[12:49] life so much easier oh yes yeah you can um change the field of view too go in there and do that oh so like ball follow like the camera will follow yeah yeah

[12:59] always it’s like it’s always like from between you and the ball cuz otherwise otherwise I’m just sitting there like what the Yeah you like a little arrow

[13:07] telling you where the ball is and that like it’s not really helpful so the ball mode yes definitely and field The View like expand that as much as you can jeez

[13:16] I see I didn’t know that existed I’m I’m well I actually no I might play you so don’t do that just play normal they’re probably be the same team

[13:23] we’re going to be new dad team like you got oh there you go yeah okay then expanded yeah we’re going to going to start our our new esport professional

[13:31] league for Rocket League I heard I heard they’re making it into an esport I don’t know if I don’t know traction but like I’ve heard that there’s been now a

[13:40] couple professional matches a couple tournaments curious to see if that it could manage it feels a little too

[13:47] hectic yeah well four versus four is chaos right I think three is the best one um and I don’t know if your screen is showing this

[13:59] Gavin’s frozen screen on my screen is amazing oh no no okay there’s just a Frozen picture of you and it was just like super happy maybe it’s my

[14:10] connection I don’t know for the a for the audio listeners he was making a super happy face super happy face that’s my my my resting dad

[14:19] face but let’s start a team let’s get sponsors we’re looking for sponsors everybody let’s uh and do an ort but you get the so I was going to some customiz

[14:29] St I obviously don’t have much cuz I just started playing but there’s like flags that are flying and there’s a bunch of flags for like there’s Rooster

[14:36] Teeth there was like a bunch of popular online venues you just like fly as a flag like behind it so I was there’s the deal with it and it comes down slowly

[14:46] onto your car you know the shades oh it’s so good again like a love letter to gaming like they they just want to make content for it and a lot of it’s free

[14:57] like the DeLorean was a buck 99 but I the developer earned my cash that money that’s like a I needed it get more joy out of that than you

[15:09] would of a cup of really bad gas station coffee there you go Justified dep depends on the context like sometimes I really need that like last like previous

[15:18] week I would have so so much preferred the gasoline coffee to the DLC I needed it the yeah man I got as far as a game you could play with your kids though

[15:32] like it’s hectic like it’s fun like it’s it’s dumb like no one gets hurt like it’s zip around in cars and hit a a ball like man that perfect for a kid if you

[15:40] ever wanted to play with your young one yeah and I have he’s watched me destroy other people I didn’t I didn’t know the car

[15:49] could die like that was surprising yeah you to speed though top speed you have yeah but like the first time it happened it was just like uh what where where am

[15:59] I what happened oh you got blown up I died yeah it was like it was surprising just cuz I had no preparation that I could possibly die next thing you know

[16:08] like my wheels are flying and just like I’m off screen like it’s like did I do this so badly I got kicked like getting spawn killed after that right I don’t

[16:18] like this game yeah oh too good um yeah otherwise on the um baby front things are going great he got his first tooth on first

[16:30] lower it is he’s so far handling it like a champ so it’s so far so good um we got to get a bunch of stuff ready to go but like it’s just this it’s just one and

[16:38] like as it keeps coming out like it’s just going to be this funny thing where he’s got this like dumb baby grin of like take like cans open

[16:48] cans there there’s certain phases where I think babies just look terribly ugly like oh yeah yeah yeah there’s like first born there’s a really weird kind

[16:56] of stage and then like you said that I didn’t say it I didn’t that just got to make sure my wife never watches this and I’ll be okay I’m not saying anything oh

[17:06] yeah you’re yours live in a room Gavin tell me about tell me about how sometimes babies are ugly go I wish I could but I can’t mine’s beautiful and

[17:14] vable so adorable and at one point like ours um mine was my child was born with so much hair and you had this like just had this

[17:26] habit of like standing up directly on on the top no matter how much like you brush it to the one side within like you know two minutes just like [ __ ] like and

[17:37] then he’ give you the dumb grin you’re like oh man you’re hilarious looking so huge hair and like one tooth sticking in the bottom y I like the faces babies

[17:46] make when they’re still figuring out like the muscles that allow them to make expressions and just like there’s certain pots that my daughter will make

[17:55] and it’s just like that’s that’s new that’s a new type of po are you trying it out to see whether it works faster like like what what’s that or then like

[18:04] just different Smiles like there’s one where it’s very it’s kind of like like mischievous there’s another one that’s like just goofy and it’s but then she

[18:15] makes like some faces that make her look like an old man and we’re just like why is she making that face it’s like it’s just

[18:22] like she just turned into like this 90-year-old man just before she explodes I think the best of the roller

[18:31] coaster where it’s one moment it’s like this massive smile could not be happier yeah and then literally for no reason just like complete turn crying

[18:41] catastrophe and like do that what on Earth happened it’s like yes yes yes yes no no no this is showing weakness I can’t do

[18:51] this it’s showing weakness this is the best day of my life I’m so happy and by that I mean this is awful God why I don’t know what makes them do that

[19:01] it’s it’s really weird it’s kind of funny to hear that your child does that too it’s just this like like there’s not even a transitional State like it’s just

[19:10] it’s like you blink yourself and upon reopening your own eyelids they’re all of a sudden like five minutes past angry to be the bone shards J jamming

[19:24] through their gums trying to make their way out that’s just that could be it Yeah by what by what design by or by what evolutionary point was the decision

[19:34] made that you know let’s have this hurt for the for the being that can’t handle anything let’s have this hurt a whole ton that that sounds wise like it’ll

[19:44] build character I think that could be nature just conditioning us it’s like you know what the world’s really not going to be

[19:51] great there so let’s just get this over with now let me just stab your gums here for a couple months yeah but no for no no big pains yet for

[20:01] it which has been fortunate the one we we had a um uh like a nurse tell us that one of the he K he was kicking a lot like still kind of asleep but like just

[20:12] like booting his legs and his arms and apparently that was like a side effect of the teething like it oh yeah I don’t know if it’s like by method of to get it

[20:20] out or like just because it’s not painful but uncomfortable like they’re just like he’s just sitting there flil like flailing his legs wildly

[20:29] wow it’s like yeah it’s part of the teething it’s like what okay sure okay babies man babies now the uh humans are odd animals

[20:42] so you want to know talking about odd animals our wives the I didn’t say that so far we have what I didn’t even hear it jeez buy

[20:53] thinking of my my beautiful baby we take some points away can there be oh come on that was a uh what does have a little dog house icon pop up that

[21:03] was said love yeah man you guys could not have distanced yourself any we’re not throwing you under the bus I don’t get what you’re saying no no we’re not

[21:09] throwing you under the bus we’re just stepping out of the way just letting it catch on fire and roll down the hill I I’m just step off the road and

[21:17] let this uh just proceed but but speaking of the young ones and the Beautiful Women Our Lives who brought in there we are you’re going to edit this

[21:25] in post aren’t you cut out all these lines oh it was said in good good fun but uh speaking of our wives and gaming the

[21:37] notion of gaming with your partner I know that for some couples it’s especially um easy or just like it’s something that they even got together on

[21:46] where like you know someone who’s dating or someone who’s married part of is now just to play games together other ones and you know I can put us in this camp

[21:52] like we have just never played a video game together not because of competitive just my wife has never been interested in it so the idea and the concept of as

[22:03] a couple as a pair and now as a baby wielding pair like what what games are good for this like what um what has been your firstly what has been your

[22:13] experience of it I can give a couple stories as well of where I’ve made mistakes was trying to get my wife into gaming um yeah Jen like what has been

[22:22] your experience with gaming with your partner and um yeah what’s wored what hasn’t uh you think it moves dog take the floor think the baby’s the baby’s

[22:32] barking now baby bark yeah she’s trying new things Ziggy enough come here now Zig I know I know for me though uh relationship wise

[22:44] and gaming wise we’re kind of middle of the road so um we have more time we could definitely play something that’s more involved right because our kids are

[22:55] enough they go to sleep you back Kevin what’s going on the dog wants to make a rockus my apartment is on sorry continue Jeff I am listening I’m just blaring at

[23:07] my dog uh in terms of our um I guess gaming time it’s she likes certain certain games that I can play with her so we’re

[23:17] kind of I guess limited to uh Tetris Dr Mario Mario 3 like that kind of stuff some more uh platform or puzzle games uh which work out because it’s pretty quick

[23:29] session you don’t get really too involved and it’s not real time like it’s well Tetris is but you always pause it um and we have fun like it’s a good

[23:39] break but nothing like crazy involved like Diablo or or anything like that right so we’re limited that way but it works

[23:50] yeah Segway because you mentioned Diablo and that was probably that’s I was thinking yeah that that’s probably one of the better Coach co-op games or or

[23:58] better yet spose co-op games I’ve played in a while um I kind of picked it up on a whim I usually played it on the PC I’m like oh let’s try it on the console and

[24:09] uh yeah I was trying it out and then I asked her well do you want to just try it like tonight you know we’ll just we’ll try something new um and then uh

[24:19] so yeah I can alone I’m not going to say anything it’s just role playing that’s all it is I don’t get oh oh

[24:31] uh so no um we she played she’s like you know what yeah’s let’s because she’s a pretty decent gamer like she’s grew up playing games like she’s she is a gamer

[24:44] um uh played a lot of games on like the N64 and even like early PC titles and that uh so like she knows her way around a controller she knows what she’s doing

[24:54] um but she had never played uh a role playing game uh or even an action role playing game before most of her uh gameplay has been more or her her play

[25:04] experience has been more like Mario Kart or Platformers or some like point- and click Adventures like Monkey Island stuff like that but uh never like a

[25:11] full-on RPG where you have character stats and stuff like that so she gave it a try and um I think because of the way it was implemented with the console it

[25:19] was just very uh easy to pick up for somebody who hadn’t played that style of game before and uh we had a really good time we ended up beating the game and

[25:27] then I think got like because it it’ll reset you can play the game with the same characters but now at the level you were at the end of the previous

[25:35] playthrough so we got through I think halfway through a second playthrough wow um and we were really enjoying it it became like a nightly thing like every

[25:43] night at 10 o’clock we would uh boot up some Diablo and play for about an hour and you know see how far we could get or see how many dungeons we could clear and

[25:51] then close it up for the night and try again the next day um I mean you’re a little early on in the with the baby but do you you see this being something like

[25:59] let’s say next week your baby has a sleep of his her life could you see yourselves booting it up and playing it again at this point uh maybe but I

[26:08] think like we kind of got our fill of that one so we might be probably interested in finding something else that’s as enjoyable uh the other thing

[26:16] that like we also play a lot of Platformers together like the Rayman series and stuff like that um but something else that we really kind of

[26:24] gotten into is I I really like narrative heavy heavy games like Last of Us and games like that and she’s actually uh really enjoyed kind of watching them um

[26:38] and then also kind of helping me make certain decisions in the course of the game so like if there is a narrative branch that it’s like oh should we go

[26:47] right or go left um she likes participating those narrative decisions uh because usually she’s in the room anyways she might even have like the

[26:57] baby with her but we’re playing a game and making those choices so I think uh future narrative heavy games like um actually

[27:05] one that contla of is oh oh oh until dawn where it’s like a horror movie and you have a group of teenagers and you all

[27:17] have to try to survive so you’re making decisions to see how it’s like a what if scenario and how would you survive a night with a serial killer um and it’s

[27:25] very kind of like tongue and cheek uh relationship Builder well the thing is that like she’s a huge fan of like the scream series and stuff like that as

[27:36] well so um it’s something that she’s interested in for just the sake of like that sounds like a fun story and it’s like a Choose Your Own Adventure so like

[27:44] let’s sit on the couch choose the adventure just because she doesn’t have the controller in hand because she might have the baby with her or even just

[27:51] because she even with the last of us we were playing that um before the baby was even born and she just liked being there to

[27:59] you know participate in the narrative and she might even be just reading a book or a magazine alongside me but she’s there with me while I’m playing

[28:05] which is great because we spend some time together we get to talk about how crazy that story arc was um so yeah but I think we are when we right now too any

[28:16] kind of together down time we do like watching some TV shows so that’s another like that pass of entertainment right now is quite easy because we can pause

[28:25] it uh and walk away from it very EAS easily um so I think maybe with a better sleep schedule we would look into that um and I also have to get around to

[28:36] finally get in a second controller for the new console that helps too uh but yeah uh but no it’s it’s I think a lot of times too is it’s it’s playing to the

[28:47] uh most games it’s playing to The Narrative of of your partner or were like the narratives that they enjoy so like she really likes Harry Potter and

[28:56] Lord of the Rings and that so with Diablo like she got to play as like like a mage you know she was like this crazy witch with like this floating skull in

[29:04] one hand and this huge wand staff and the other and she got to kind of like play with fantasy tropes that she’s used to reading about her seeing in films uh

[29:16] but she got to kind of experience that in a way that she hadn’t before with games even though she had been playing a lot of games and that’s a lot of fun too

[29:22] and I think that’s kind of like the Gateway mechanism to maybe get a partner into a that they might not have been into before is like well you’re into

[29:32] this narrative style or you’re into this genre here’s just a new way of enjoying that genre and that’s usually the hook and

[29:41] then they got you then they’re in for Life yeah no cuz the see it’s too bad we don’t have one more um new Dad here today that could be

[29:51] someone whose wife was like a hardcore gamer as well much like them so they could get that experience or even more so than them yeah the guy’s like yeah I

[30:00] like Fruit Ninja and Angry Birds and she’s like I’m like and I’m like a level 508 or something like just crazy stats and it’s

[30:11] like that’s what she does we have to find that for next week see give an update what that life is like because I’d be the because I’m the

[30:20] ABS otherwise we have the entire Spectrum right Jeff some games pretty tiny Gavin a bit more involved up until Diablo and then myself just nothing like

[30:29] Flatline would be hilarious though if we find out that like your wife is moonlighting is like a Call of Duty Esports

[30:36] Champion Call of Duty too like like just she loves poning noobs just like just screaming like the most vile stuff like what are you doing with the baby with

[30:47] the baby in one arm she’s like using a controller and a foot like a hand and a foot on the controller and she’s just like you know completely owning

[30:57] everybody CU so she had she had never played games as a kid um even teenager never really no introduction into it and the place poor girl what a what a sad

[31:07] childhood um and then you hear about all the books she’s read and you’re like oh knowledge you all these skills and knowledge like well she she can show

[31:17] jump how many languages speak again three languages she can show jump horses she was um jeez she was near the import she was near Olympics swimming like it

[31:27] was yeah but my my Dia character look at us yeah too bad she never got into gaming she could have really done some

[31:38] stuff something with her life but the um so the missteps I took was I I remember I decided to try it as far as like I’m going to try to see if

[31:48] she would want to play a game and I remember and I to my ultimate shame like I I rented like Viva Pata or um oh that thing yeah remember I remember it

[32:02] looking pretty but then I remember hearing bad things it just a collection of like mini games and it seemed like it seemed low low barri entry like cutesy

[32:10] so it wasn’t going to be anything like above but it was so pandering and so like insult it’s just like why why would you waste time playing this thing like

[32:18] like this is stupid she he hated it in many way so that was like that was the that that was a terrible mistake it’s just like oh this is what like look I I

[32:27] think games are kind dumb and then you play this game it’s like look at this waste of time cutesy nonsense and the challenges are stupid like I’m winning

[32:35] all the time like this is foolish like why do I bother I do also in a I think I was playing Halo I I just gotten a 360 for the first time and

[32:43] was going through Halo well beyond like when it was um already out like years past and she was watching I’m like what why don’t you just grab a controller and

[32:52] like hop in let see what it’s like and to see her and to see the exploration of movement as far as like spinning around and yeah just like looking up but then

[33:02] the character like is frozen looking up and she doesn’t know till like kind of like use the other one to look down like so it’s the two the thing that we take

[33:08] for granted but like the two thumb right control thing which now at this point after our training quote unquote of always being Gamers is so natural we

[33:18] have a lot of there’s a lot of muscle memory that can be transferable from game to game MH um and even like subcategorized so it’s like oh I’m

[33:26] playing a third person action game so I know how this is how it works and I know how to like Dodge roll and blah blah blah because so many games share button

[33:34] schemes because they know that the people have gotten used to this so a lot it’s like yeah a to jump because it’s been that way for decades forever don’t

[33:44] mess with it until you play a game where they’re like use a bumper to jump I’m like that’s weird why are you making me do this going to the does That Dying

[33:52] Light makes you use the bumper to jump oh change yeah no you can’t map it because it’s like a once you get used to it though it makes sense but it’s it it

[34:03] was hard to unlearn because my muscle was like to jump but yeah to see somebody who doesn’t have that muscle memory play the game for the first time

[34:09] and it’s like they’re looking straight down and spinning around and frustration even even my wife had trouble with the Dual thumbstick

[34:18] firstperson Shooters because her firstperson shooter experience was golden ey so if you put a golden ey controller in her hand okay she’s still

[34:27] at peace golden ey N64 um and she she’s able to just completely decimate me because my new

[34:37] firstperson shooter muscle memory is for like a dual analog controller right as opposed to the single analog stick and then that weird like you hold a button

[34:46] down and then use the cursor and then the like I just I forgot how to do it uh but she still has it because she hasn’t unlearned it to learn the new way that’s

[34:56] being done with the modern consoles uh so yeah she just completely makes a fool of me nice I think the um so the place in so in three areas that I I found

[35:06] interesting one was at a party there was um the Wario like Warrior Weare oh yeah like the crazy like little mini mini games and she it’s great like she just

[35:21] she got it and it was reactive in the S like now grab the controller and jump or like you know switch this way or turn around and like because that physic

[35:29] physicality to it as well as the digital like there was that ability to do it like there wasn’t this like limiting input for it and according like she had

[35:37] an excellent time with that one so that was funny to watch uh there was one game where it was um I got it off of this arcade set it was kind of just like a

[35:46] matching game basically actually think it might have been Beed so just like take these old um crystals switch them around switch them

[35:54] around yeah and that one like I was excited about because she actually asked how do you turn on this Xbox I want to play that game oh nice and she did that

[36:03] for a couple month and I was like this is amazing sitting there just all like puppy dog eyes like this is all it’s

[36:10] happening so keep going and then and then now the only the kind of like the third ray of light where I think that there’s still possibly a chance and it

[36:18] is what it is I’m not not going to be really worried about it if it never materialized it’s just a hobby that I take so um take so much joy in I’d like

[36:27] her to come along but with um we we really got into the TV show The Flash okay and the reason why I think that’s a ray of light is just like

[36:37] that um leap like that leaf of belief as far as okay well these guys have these magic powers and this guy’s got this magic power and he’s zipping around and

[36:46] he’s a hero and he’s got to save and being able to connect and enjoy that story line feels like the it’s a much smaller leap than to go into a video

[36:56] game perhaps much like um you said last of us like the idea that then they could get into last of us look that same storyline and then you know the path

[37:05] begins it’s yeah it’s also a good prep for your kids right because my kids are all into superheroes now so now my wife knows every single superhero and

[37:13] superpower and the villain that is against them so yeah that might even be a good entrance into other games right maybe your you know once your kids start

[37:23] getting into gaming maybe she’ll start to play with them and that’s the you know the light at the end of the tunnel so to speak that she can get another

[37:31] game I thought of though that was a good one was um Guitar Hero which uped right even families you break it over at Christmas and the family’s playing that

[37:41] was a good one is the type of uh like arcade game you would have seen like at a sports bar you know golf one where you fly the wheel and it does a thing yeah

[37:52] you know those types of games uh I think they’re they’re very well design for just anybody to pick up it’s basically you pick up this plastic

[38:01] thing and you do something and then bright colors will and uh yeah actually that’s a very good because yeah my wife and I would

[38:10] play a lot of um like a lot of Guitar Hero especially like the The Beatles or no The Rock Band Beatles we played a lot of that too and uh it was great we never

[38:20] got too involved with like buying the drums and all the other kits but no but even just the guitar right it was very accessible to almost anybody so I think

[38:29] I got the guitar for free too I had a buddy who was like I got a new one you want this sure got this custom yeah yeah yeah see my my worry with that is that

[38:39] like it seems a bit um jeez what’s the word gimmicky in some sense where it’s just like as long as the game is even with Warrior Weare I guess what I’m

[38:47] trying to find is the the video game that is a video game like through and through like some something that could be kind of almost classically defined as

[38:53] a video game like Guitar Hero and Warrior Weare not to say that they’re not video games necessarily but they have such a physical or such a gimmick

[39:01] to them that it’s like okay well we can do these things as long as there is you know a external like gun that you can point or as long as there’s like

[39:09] nunchucks that you’re zipping around or there’s you know a plastic guitar as opposed to like the core of a video game as far as like this input and that

[39:18] there’s a figure on screen that you’re controlling then things happen and trying to find that enjoyment of it I I don’t want without motion controls or

[39:26] additional peripherals right yeah I mean so what like my the one I’m hoping for like I I’m sometime this week we’re going to be trying out lovers in the

[39:34] dangerous space time yeah because it’s seems infinitely approachable it’s very much made for Coach Co-op I think some of the the harder levels are probably a

[39:43] little bit beyond us but still just that the Aesthetics and the how well it’s been built and made it feels like it would be it’s a little bit beyond what

[39:51] the skill level might be but it would still present a playground by which you could start to want to understand it and like get into it yeah and I think like

[40:00] even the like the earlier levels are approachable enough that you can you can actually play it by yourself with the the dog because there’s like a dog AI

[40:09] character oh there’s a dog in it yeah or cat uh depending on your preference uh cat DeLorean DLC no DeLorean no no DeLorean noan um

[40:22] but yeah I think that’s actually a really good idea Trevor because it’s it’s a game that is uh it it scales up in difficulty quite

[40:31] well and it’s even a good experience for somebody who doesn’t play a lot of games to play a game that does kind of kick them around a bit because that’s the

[40:40] challenge like that’s what makes for a fun game like that’s what makes you want to play that level again you know it’s like Bowser keeps knocking you into lava

[40:51] you want to keep going you know uh you know you you keep getting snag with this same shape combination and Tetris you want to keep

[41:01] trying uh that’s the kind of the fun part of video games I find uh is just that you hit that snag and you’re like I have I I’ve hit a problem I need to try

[41:10] to work around it and to be able to work around a problem like that together I think is going to be uh really great because that’s one of

[41:19] the things I I found playing Diablo or even when we play Platformers together like uh Donkey Kong or or games like that it’s sometimes we hit a level

[41:28] that’s so hard we’re almost ready to like snap a controller and sometimes we even get a little bit short with each other and uh never like mad but just

[41:37] like it’s like seriously seriously you knocked me off the platform um but when when we finally you know beat that level together it’s a

[41:50] very awesome high five um and I think that’s one of the joys of finding a game that you can play with your with your partner is that that fun of overcoming

[42:01] adversity together but in a very safe space because at the end of the day it’s just a video game it’s not like trying to overcome a landlord evicting you like

[42:09] you’re just overcoming achievement unlocked achievement unlock you get to keep living here um but yeah it’s it’s just finding that I think that the game

[42:20] that you’re picking as far as a good entry one I think is fantastic because there is going to be a lot of moments because it’s also ually generated too

[42:28] even if you get stuck on the same area you can Replay that area and every time it’s going to be different I think what’s good about two in my thinking of

[42:36] it is that with because there two player and there’s a bunch of frw hasn’t seen it like it’s all there’s you’re in a spaceship you’re in space you’re trying

[42:43] to run around and save or survive in space killing a bunch of guys you have to try to save characters on it and more to the point there’s how many stations

[42:52] are there again like six uh there’s four guns a shield uh navigation like the basically uh piloting the ship and then a super

[43:03] weapon so I think seven total okay yeah so seven things um you can only control as a player one at a time and then your partner has to control one too yeah so

[43:11] you know you’re constantly running around it’s teamwork you’re yelling at each other saying okay you get the shields I’ll get the thrusters and

[43:17] that’s great and I think what’s exciting about that is that if I can kind of pull the team a little bit in the sense that if like you you ask her to take care of

[43:26] one or even just a couple of them well so this is a success it’s not this like if I play it’s I think there needs to be that shift in play style where if I’m

[43:34] playing with you know you Jeff or You Gavin there’s a certain expectation I would have about you guys holding holding yourself that we can actually

[43:41] steer the ship where this I know that yeah this I know I can like you know what I’ll take care of these like five you take care of these two yeah and just

[43:49] so there’s that enjoyable experience and then accordingly you know you get a bit more progress in it so that aspect of it I think was

[43:57] enticing to me for it I think too when we were playing the game is that uh it was just a matter of like okay what thing do you like doing the most and

[44:07] then it’s like yeah I just want to fly the ship and it’s like all right then you just pilot the ship and then I’m going to run around and use the guns and

[44:14] then like if we found ourselves in a really really hairy spot then then the person piloting would just be like okay I’m done flying we let’s just park and

[44:22] blast and then we just do that so I think that it is a good game for that too because it could be a thing where the first couple times you play it she’s

[44:30] like I just want to drive I just want to drive tell me where to drive and you run around and shoot things um and then later on it’s like you know what you

[44:37] drive I kind of want to try shooting at stuff and uh yeah I think it’s uh it could work really well this episode is brought to you by

[44:47] lover you could also consider like other games that oh it’s a single player but if it was um like Journey where it’s more of like you can’t die it’s more of

[44:55] like an artistic kind of Feelgood game so you can kind of get those platforming type controls down without anything chasing to kill you or jumping on things

[45:06] yeah where you’re just kind of skating down sand dunes and and looking at stuff and trying to solve simpal puzzles was fun too it’s a good

[45:14] like and now you play and then I play and then you play so it’s not really a multiplayer or a co-op game but it’s one that you take turns like finding a game

[45:22] that’s good for taking turns is also a fantastic way of doing stuff it’s it’s uh you know it’s like okay that was my attempt at this level do you want to try

[45:30] this level and do better than me kind of thing or it’s not straightup competition like you’re never ranked or put on a pedestal next to the person but it’s

[45:39] just a matter of like it’s like a playground that you just that hilarious too Mar I forgot about that sound the soundtrack on that game is Just

[45:48] Immaculate beautiful art I was thinking now I think about with um something like jurny like I’d be a little bit worried that there’d be some points where she

[45:56] like like what’s the point of this like what is this like if you don’t know that there’s going to be not if the game get if the game strikes a debate about the

[46:04] the existence and necessity of art then like it may be no longer a Leisure activity like it gets into that realm where it starts like you know a really

[46:14] in-depth conversation of like well where does pop culture end and art begins and it’s like okay we’re not having fun anymore I’m going to go pot of coffee on

[46:23] sit down and yeah working for me yeah yeah it feels like journey is a bit more made for gamers like it’s approachability as far like it would be

[46:33] a bigger payoff for somebody who’s played games and was able to get some nuances of it I think props and you know this I’ll propose this to both of you um

[46:44] Little Big Planet I don’t know if you’ve ever tried that with the sign uh we haven’t picked it up since we got the new console but uh that that is one that

[46:53] her and I both looked at and been like yeah that looks like a lot of fun yeah I could see that one working too right it’s a lot of Co-op um slightly I I

[47:02] never got used to the controls the floatiness of it so it actually might work well for like a beginner where it gives you more time to kind of time your

[47:10] jump onto whatever platform right because you kind of float up a little bit more than like Mario so that could be a good one to kind of Co-op together

[47:18] yeah it just seems like there and there’s an approach ability to it like it’s put together to be like safe like quirky fun and the levels are just like

[47:28] a lot of things kind of just happen so you just like happen to jump up for this bubble or whatever they their currency kind of was and all of a sudden like

[47:34] this one falls off this falls off big piece moves you slide down so there’s kind of like constant rewards and entertainment of it it had seemed to me

[47:42] like a a good place in at the same time I don’t I didn’t find it I only ever played a I never had a PSP or Ps never had PS3 have not had a PS4 so again I’ve

[47:54] only ever played it on the PS p but so doing like it just felt like there it’s kind of a safe easy place where with plenty of charm to spare I mean these

[48:02] guys are obviously cute as heck and dress another one actually that would be good because you could get it on the PSP is um a game called guaca yeah uh that

[48:12] one’s a lot of fun and it’s a two-player Co-op and it’s kind of like um it’s like a a Rumble game where like you just like a lot of fun wrestling moves and pile

[48:23] drivers and stuff and you’re just fighting like these like Day of the Dead skeleton dudes and ponchos it’s just really fun lots of lots of bright colors

[48:32] uh very very pretty but it’s also fun to interact with and it has this sort of Metroid Vania style where uh as you unlock different abilities they unlock

[48:43] further areas in the map so your ability to explore the world that you’re in gets better as you get better um but when you’re playing Co-op you both level up

[48:53] at the same time so like when you unlock a new special attack that can break a certain color of brick that happen simultaneously so you both get to grow

[49:02] in unison and become powerful in unison might be good to do the Sid scroller thing too right because you’re not dealing with depth you’re just just left

[49:12] right up down yeah um and I found with with guacamelee it’s also as you said like sometimes if you’re playing a game where you can carry a little bit more

[49:20] weight so like in this one she you can kind of Corral enemies more towards you and and leave her with like as many enemies as she feels comfortable with

[49:30] but then like after you’re done beating up the guys on your side of the screen if she’s kind of needing some help you can run over and help her out um that’s

[49:39] assuming that you don’t like oh I’ll come and save you and she’s like standing on a pile of dead uh because that could very well happen uh but that

[49:48] that game could be a lot of fun too because it’s a platformer you don’t have to deal with any like 3D stuff uh but it’s absolutely beautiful and really fun

[49:55] to just on Bad Dudes and turn them into big piles of Bones oh you can you can kick chickens oh yeah that’s yeah that’s true

[50:05] they don’t get hurt they just turn red and then flap around angrily and then they’re fine okay I I have like uh I’m terrified at chickens after or or Kina

[50:14] of time like the like death chickens after you hurt those guys like man like chicken G completely different story one that actually happened to you in real

[50:24] life at the time what happened at Spring break don’t ask the summer was 1990 it was a hot one the chicken the chicken’s name was

[50:38] clucker oh no but the yeah it’s kind of funny I thought too like she you mentioned PS I had mentioned PSP which actually jar a memory as far as there’s

[50:48] a game local Ro local Robo sounds familiar yeah it’s like the little little loo with The Blob yeah the little yellow blob screen instead of him

[50:57] yeah exactly they just like hop around and it’s super colorful and the song like it’s so catchy and amazing yeah yeah and when I think of it though again

[51:05] like that that almost feels like that’s more of a viap pinata scenario where it would to the sense where like you it’s like hey you should totally play video

[51:13] games they come in with an kind of an idea that you know video games are for kids like this is childish stuff and you hand them this thing and it’s like these

[51:22] little singing Yellow blobs and they’re jumping around in the background is looks like a car like a Disney carto Mari you got this cow and this King and

[51:33] rainbows and this is stupid I don’t yeah that game is hard like if you want to like 100% it it’s impossible oh it is but like just the presentation of it but

[51:43] first glance it’s like what is this it’s like Yo Gaba Gaba had a seizure yeah there you go it might be good for dads and moms to play they’re just like yeah

[51:52] whatever I’m used to this yeah kids are watching instead of yeah it’s like yeah don’t worry kid I’ll throw Yo Gaba Gaba on it’s actually just

[52:00] Katamari no idea are are you playing yeah you see what you’re saying though you know you don’t want to jump into

[52:09] something too kid-like and then she’s like yeah this isn’t working for me right it’s the unfortunate instance is that sometimes though the visual

[52:16] aesthetic in a game looks very childlike but the actual meat of it is very nuanced yeah and that can also throw off firsttime Gamers as they’re like this is

[52:26] just Child’s Play It’s like no give it time you’ll realize that it is actually just a very colorful Rubik’s Cube with smiley faces all over it but it’s still

[52:35] a really hard Rubik’s Cube so yeah so the um try Tetris try try Tetris we do Tetris two player against each other it’s at least it’s an

[52:45] introduction to a puzzle game yeah you can really get frustrated with it so you might want to stop before that happens but honestly like yeah I would I would

[52:52] work your way up from the classics like even something as simple as pong like

[53:01] no when was the last time you had an opportunity to actually play Pong with a friend you know or even with your partner like that that game is it’s it’s

[53:09] table hockey but it’s like incredibly good at uh table tennis so I could go oh there you go or even uh like breakout she’d be

[53:19] probably good at that used to Banking and like catching a and ricocheting something uh game like that she might really really like because there are a

[53:27] lot of games like that that they’re not gimmicky they’re actually very balanced and nuanced but uh at first glance they kind of look like something you see in

[53:35] an old arcade but that’s why you’d see them in the old arcades is because they were good and everybody was putting quarters in them yeah I think good want

[53:42] to find the version that has taken some of the more modern touches to it I think and I I think there was uh Pac-Man tournament Edition or DX or whatever

[53:52] that was mhm and like the thing that they did like you grab some of the powerups in the entire screen shakes and the music intensifies and what what it’s

[54:01] just help it pushes the emot there’s there’s really this emotional Detachment from really old games like there’s a simple controls that’s fine but that

[54:09] really it was just a flat presentation music never really changed unless you died and even then it was just like like over right yeah the hus to be

[54:18] inv invested in it was totally on the players yeah responsibility like there wasn’t anything really triggering an emotional response it was just your own

[54:27] need to get Frogger across that road yeah and the stuff that we’ve done now was like there’s challenges like it mentions you need to get these three

[54:33] things when you grab something the screen shakes and gives you this visceral feet like I don’t think visceral is right word in that case but

[54:41] it gives you this big response where like something big has happened I’m affecting this world this is amazing the music Peaks like there’s a you know a

[54:50] whole orchestral score that’s helping you you know Define the emotions that could be attached to it and thus create a better connection to it so I guess

[54:58] like so as much I think Classics presents an opportunity as far as simplistic yet tried and true interactions that you know will work

[55:08] it’s just there’s something I would be lost if if I went too far back or too simple so so tetr for me I guess it’ have to be like Tetris Tetris Bomberman

[55:16] what about Bomberman you can try Bomberman yeah I think it could but I think tet could work as just like newer exactly I think to though is like

[55:25] sometimes the visual ual flourishes that they’re adding to some of these games are are removing the uh I could play it but for somebody

[55:35] who had never played games before they’d be like yeah that’s a little bit much you know it’s it’s it could be too much too soon where maybe a couple years down

[55:44] the road then they’re like yeah I need a little bit more intensity in the interaction and response from what I’m I’m

[55:52] playing uh but for the time being like I just need something that’s going going to allow me to get my head around it without the distraction of too many

[56:02] particle effects and flourishes um so yeah it’s like it’s finding that sweet balance like if you’re going to introduce somebody to

[56:09] hamburgers for the first time like you don’t want to just take them to some fast food joint and get them this greasy gray thing but I think also taking them

[56:17] out for like Kobe beef sliders might be too far the other way so it’s like trying to find that right hamburger that’s not you know Co covered in shaped

[56:29] truffle or peeled up the back of a 7-Eleven like there’s it’s finding that sweet spot where it’s like this will give them the best possible experience

[56:37] without being overwhelmingly complicated or underwhelmingly uncomplicated that should be the uh I want that episode title to be which

[56:46] hamburger is for you in terms of start starter hamburgers finding the perfect starter hamburger gaming with spes also know an

[56:56] introduction to hamburgers yeah and on that note yeah everyone I think we always seem to end on I make a horrible

[57:08] metaphor your thing on that note happens it’s like it’s like a Gavino meter like eventually just gets full at the top and just okay

[57:16] we we Gavin for this episode let’s call her a night but uh you know it was just so we are just basking in the Brilliance of that metaphor that like what else

[57:29] what else do you say what else drop we’re done [ __ ] out oh so everybody thanks for tuning in to another episode as always we do this every week uh
