[0:08] we’re down one dad this week but I found the big red record button so let’s continue the show uh about fatherhood gaming and new dads figuring out their

[0:16] gaming lives uh my name is Jeff filling in for Trevor I have a two and a half and a five and a half year old my name is Gavin I’m filling in for

[0:26] Jeff and I have a five Monon old welcome thank you yes so we are down Trevor he had to step out as with all dad happens people get sick family gets

[0:40] sick um I had my time last week with sick kids and they’re still recovering so it’s been rough it’s been a rough January yeah I think there was like I

[0:52] don’t know one of us might have upset like some some old hidden witch on a subway that you know balance Cosmic balances off disturbance in the forest I

[1:04] don’t know what it is because yeah last last week my dog was uh you know sleep is is a pretty rare commodity um we’re really lucky with our baby but like I

[1:15] take advantage of her sleeping as in like hey I can get some more work done and uh then the dog got really sick so then like it was just like yeah you you

[1:24] thought you’re going to bed no no you’re coming inside of me and we’re gonna stand around and you’re gonna watch me do some really bad

[1:30] stuff the vet so but he’s doing fine now so back well but uh yeah and that’s just that’s just a dog so I can’t imagine what it’s like with you having were both

[1:41] your kids sick um well one was just like a sniffly cough but um my oldest one uh he’s prone to ear infections so that’s always fun he’s got ear tubes too so

[1:52] we’ve gone through that surgery uh but one’s falling out so he’s getting them again and we’re gonna have to go back in and put them under and put them back in

[2:01] so it’s not a huge deal but he has to recover from drugs and taking a day off and all that fun stuff but he’s doing better he’s on the heavy

[2:15] antibiotics so he’s in bed sound asleep and then I caught whatever uh was going around I don’t know at the office or here and it was just a rough rough

[2:25] week took a day off work and days off work or not quite the same when you have a day off with your sick kid so I remember taking days off and you could

[2:36] you sit home and game or do whatever you wanted to when entertain make it Nast of blankets and just yeah doesn’t happen with h with a little one running around

[2:48] and having to entertain but um entertain them when they are sick and shouldn’t be up and around but more drugs here’s more drugs yeah what else can I give

[3:03] you how would I put on another episode of Paw Patrol and pass out yes Paw Patrol please I’m so sick of it um but gaming wise I didn’t do much

[3:18] this week I did try or download uh undertale I was wanted to try that one so I leapt and uh into it it’s a pretty fun game I recommend it I won’t spoil

[3:33] anything because you kind of have to try it out for yourself but uh yeah it’s made by like one dude and like another artist and they just did the whole thing

[3:42] and it’s crazy how the amount of like animation and pixel art and the whole thing uh it’s like a retro nostalgic perfectly like right up my alley kind of

[3:54] game uh with like a modern twist it’s awesome I love it even the music he said he created he just went off the music and he didn’t like edit it or like it

[4:05] amazing just highly recommend it it’s great game but uh that was about it for me I didn’t get into The Witcher again I didn’t want anything too heavy with yeah

[4:14] sickness and everything but I don’t know about you one you like if you’re sick you’re not really that cognizant like you’re kind of like a yeah now and then

[4:25] on top of that like with sick kids around I could imagine you know it’s you’re more on call than usual so to really just settle in yeah you can’t

[4:35] really you know be like oh now I’m gonna get some time to myself it’s like no not for a few more days no not getting emotionally invested in any of my

[4:45] characters just yeah yeah yeah easily sit back what about you anything uh just chipped away at a couple titles that I’ve been working on uh mostly just a

[4:55] little bit of Fallout honestly just too lazy to change the disc have you had that happen to you I that’s why it kind of went digital because it’s

[5:04] just like you flipped to it it’s gotten to that point I find with steam I hop around more frequently between games yeah but if anything though I think the

[5:14] console and having like physical media uh forces me to finish what I start because I have a bad habit of not finishing games

[5:22] so yeah it’s but then it’s also bad with like let’s say like for my uh 360 for example I have a few games I still need to finish on that and it’s even harder

[5:34] to get myself to finish those because not only do I have to put the disc and but I gotta s the entertainment system so um yeah I

[5:44] don’t think I’m just give up it’s not happening I think i’ would be better off just like getting it on like Steam and then yeah and just starting and because

[5:55] that’s the thing too is I’m so it’s been so long since I touched the things that I forget what was even happening right you know I think I did that with mass

[6:04] effect to I was pretty close to the end and I dropped out and then I can’t go back I don’t know that was me with Dishonored um I got really the end I

[6:15] love the game I don’t know why I stopped something shiny distracted me or something uh and then yeah it’s just I just I I want to finish it

[6:26] especially before the next one game out comes out but I just don’t know if I can pick up where I left off and I also don’t know if I have the time to start

[6:34] from scratch so I’m just like H I’m off I’m done it’s like falling out from other TV shows too like I got so much catching up to

[6:42] do I just I got too many other things there’s too much content out there good stuff to just stick with stuff it’s hard to like television shows and that it’s

[6:51] like every week there’s something else coming out I’m like oh that looks good and I’m like am I kidding I can’t I’ll just read the blog on it you

[6:59] know the next day and just get a feel full like even if you had a reasonable amount of free time there’s still way too much content to enjoy like there’s a

[7:10] few Choice shows that my wife and I enjoy and that’s about the extent um everything else it’s just yeah some of that we’re just

[7:18] letting it slide by like uh I haven’t watched Game of Thrones in a long time oh no that’s a good one know I know that’s

[7:29] when I will invest I will have to watch I will stay up and watch that one but yes I understand completely see that hard because you have to try to unless

[7:38] you have HBO um yeah either be a good citizen and wait for it to come out um on like you know Digital streaming or whatnot or be a not so good citizen

[7:49] which is also not always the best yeah um but yeah I don’t know maybe if once the uh the crtc for our International uh listeners um crtc is like a it’s like a

[8:02] media uh cable regulation board basically just make sure that I don’t know I don’t know what they do they don’t really do I’m not sure they make

[8:11] your life difficult that’s what they do they make your life difficult but uh there’s that whole thing where now their package deals with our cable providers

[8:18] they’re gonna have to break up stations individually so actually in Canada be able to order HBO by itself because right now the only way you can get HBO

[8:25] in Canada is if you buy a whole bunch of movie channels that you don’t want because you already have Netflix so well all the sports channels

[8:33] too which is like all involved in those tiar and I don’t really watch that I don’t watch sports but to get to HBO like you have to yeah you have to like

[8:42] do all you have to buy the special Elite Vip exclusive gold package yeah just to unlock the ability to buy HBO and it’s like [ __ ] her off it’s exactly like a

[8:56] video game right you just have to unlock those levels and you’re no can’t do it yeah but I I would like to see those have been doing the Pay to Win model for

[9:04] like years ever ever yeah I don’t get yeah but when they do go like alakar kind of thing it would be interesting to see what kind of price point they’re at

[9:14] yeah just when they come out unle everything but yeah I totally get it like investing in a new TV show or something it’s like gting any other

[9:22] thing like a game you need to it needs to be a hit like within that first couple hours otherwise I drop out like if a pilot the first or second episode

[9:31] don’t fly with me uh I I jump out yeah master of none we’re just like yep no that’s not it’s not sticking with us and we just Let It Drop yeah yeah it can’t

[9:42] be can’t be too much of a slow burn it’s got to be a a quick fix Quick Fix we only got so much time we got to make it count but I don’t have enough time for

[9:53] anything but instant gratification so just well and then you mix in uh you know work uh freelance work getting sick taking care of kids birthday party

[10:04] school BL just wait till school and birthday parties come out and just there’s a lot going on so but rough like a I’ll make sure that

[10:16] like she’s down as like Jedi for her uh religious orientation and and then that way we don’t have to I’ll just say it’s like oh

[10:25] it’s not part of the Jedi system can’t do it yeah which I will mention I finally did see Star Wars it it was last week it was

[10:35] good it was great like for what it like you had to kind of believe what it was right uh and be in that world which was great and the best part was is that I

[10:43] wasn’t spoiled by anything because oh my like any YouTube video that wasn’t related somebody would comment saying don’t go below some you know some idiot

[10:53] spoil the movie in one line I didn’t with comment sections or anything for like no just stay away from the but uh I did finally see it it was I had

[11:04] like an extra day off work um um and I went midaf afternoon and I was the only person in the theater which was good and uh lonely but it was it was a good movie

[11:18] and um I was looking at all the old games like all the old Star Wars games just to see if you know because it kind of rekindled everything yeah and uh see

[11:27] what I could play and they released all the old Super Nintendo Star Wars games on PlayStation so I was like oh those look so good right now just the whole

[11:38] craze taking over and my kids have their lightsabers in hand so you can’t really get away from any of it but yeah I know it was good I enjoyed it it was

[11:46] thoroughly entertaining I liked a lot of the new characters I got like you know a bit of a man crush on that Poe oh yeah yeah yeah he was awesome he was great I

[11:54] was like that’s uh it’s fun to have like this cool pilot guy I really like the actor he’s always good whenever I see him and stuff so um and yeah I thought

[12:05] uh I thought boa the the um oh what’s his name oh Finn Finn Finn is it Finn yeah yeah yeah he I I liked him back when I first saw him as an actor

[12:18] which was in Attack the Block which was oh yeah yeah yeah yeah I’ve seen that one yeah um I did not connect that yeah yeah that was the first time I’d seen

[12:27] him I think the only other time I ever saw him uh in an acting role was um he played a drone pilot on 24 when they did that new

[12:35] uh miniseries in London oh okay so he played an American drone pilot who got like accused of murder but he didn’t actually his drone Got Hijacked so he’s

[12:45] like this poor like poor like just this new he’s like what did I walk into oh my God exactly and he did a good job on that too so yeah I really like him I

[12:56] like uh the actress who played Ray I thought she was great yeah yeah strong performance post on Facebook a video of her like deadlifting 185 pounds yes yeah

[13:06] her training for that Holy impressive yeah and everybody even kylo Ren I thought he’s he was making an interesting villain um yeah they got to

[13:16] mess him up a bit I think they got to make him less well he was he’s not nice but kind of nice he was straddling like he was still I think it was a part of

[13:26] him inside that still is you know yeah like like with Vader as well you know Vader always had that part of him still kind of hearkening towards the the

[13:36] light side but uh yeah should be good I’m excited to see some of these spin-off uh movies as well there’s this one called uh Rogue one Rog one yeah

[13:47] next year yeah or this year next year I think so it looks great though the cast is amazing yeah yeah yeah yeah no yeah Heist movie

[13:59] in the Star Wars Universe perfect with Hannibal and Donnie Yen sign me up it’s sold right yeah gez you’re gonna make killing off

[14:09] that’s just two of them there’s like so many other cast members that are just well I have a buddy too that plays um uh Battlefront right not Trevor I

[14:18] know he gets it on H steam but I have a buddy on PS4 that has it and he wants me to get it but it’s too expensive uh right now with the content I think we’ve

[14:27] talked to Trevor about that um but I’m like oh cool if they had Force awakens stuff like I know they have like the one map but if they start

[14:35] putting out that like a kylo ren character and stuff and I think they’ve publicly said that they won’t do it so they’re like gonna make a whole game

[14:42] based I imagine based off the movie and just charge another hundred bucks and get people people will pay it I’m sure they will that’s why doing a like

[14:52] instead of standing on the base that they have they’re like no no no let’s make more it’s a brand new set of servers that need to get populated yeah

[15:01] well then you fragment everything that’s why I always hated with um I was big into Battlefield when it was on PC yeah um well it still is on PC but way back

[15:11] when I think Battlefield 2 or something I don’t know but then it got so fragmented because they pumped out like uh expansion packs sequels uh expanded

[15:19] to consoles so I bu the the game with the season pass yes yeah which is a must now it play it consistently like multiple times a week

[15:32] then you just get left behind yeah um luckily with Battlefield because it is such a large Arena um you can still kind of have some fun even though you’re just

[15:43] like a kid playing in a sandbox while the grown-ups are having like you know like you’re you’re not really contributing um you’re just there and

[15:52] they kind of Pat you on the head and they run off and actually do the important stuff oh yeah I’m not I’m not contributing so the one crash in the

[15:59] helicopter sure you buddy yeah okay we’re going to fix your tank okay just just whatever just don’t use any explosives okay okay okay okay

[16:10] yeah yeah I don’t know yeah we’ll see where it goes but I’m sure there’ll be a Star Wars themed game and spin-offs and next episode spin-off DLC and I just

[16:22] think it’s a shame that um the quality of the experience is being hindered by uh um their profitability yeah their quest for

[16:33] profitability and I think with a juggernaut of a of a of an industry of of a franchise as as Star Wars I was gonna say industry but then actually

[16:45] know that was right the first time it is an industry Star Wars in itself is an industry um something that big you think that they could take a bit of a hit yeah

[16:56] right reason like it just seems like fan service like just here here’s something very much like they’re just they know people are hooked you know and it’s just

[17:08] like well you know sorry but that’s that’s the price of of the drug it’s like but I really want it yeah we know that’s why the drug so expensive yeah

[17:17] first hits like 50 bucks your second third hits are gonna be or even free like that beta test open beta test that they did right yeah which I did download

[17:26] yeah all all that was was just a taste yeah see get you hooked we now discovered it Star Wars a drug yeah yeah sponsored by EA yeah whoops uh yeah I

[17:40] think that’s the thing is I I just wish that there was a little bit more like it just seems like at every turn um this one particular game most notably

[17:51] but I see it in a few of the major AAA titles that there’s always like this extra barrier an extra pay barrier extra this and extra that you’re like but you

[18:01] guys are doing fine like you’re making record-breaking money and I understand you wanted to maintain like high profit margins so that way you can put it

[18:11] reinvest it and make an even better one the next time um I get that I’m just it’s business right but there’s a threshold that you can hit where you’re

[18:20] like okay now let’s just like provide service to our customers our paying customers who already paid us for it you know it’s the same with I found

[18:32] with like dying light for example they did a really good job with they even gave their customers a heads up like hey we got to raise the price on our season

[18:40] pass because the thing that we’re making the expansion pack oh is better than that on it’s actually turning into a full game so we’re gonna add five bucks

[18:48] but we’re not going to do it for a few more weeks so you guys can go ahead and jump on it now at the price it was GNA be if you’re on the fence and because

[18:54] after that we’re going to raise it and I thought that was great it’s like yeah you know what I understand you got to raise it because thing grew better than

[19:00] you anticipated right and that’s I’m excited to play it and thanks for the heads up I will take offer and I will pay for it now yeah well yeah that

[19:10] that’s interesting right like they offered you to save money like yeah here this is gonna happen here’s our plan right instead of here’s a pay wall yeah

[19:20] yeah exactly I thought that was very commendable so well even with um well I’m never I don’t know if I’ll ever finish Wich three but they have that

[19:30] huge expansion that’s coming out yeah that they’ve said is almost as big as the original game yeah and they will charge you know I think it was 19 bucks

[19:38] or whatever but it will offer you know another 40 hours and it’s got all this new areas it’s not like rehashing anything it’s all new assets and this is

[19:47] what it’s going to cost you can get it you cannot get it it’s not going to impact the original game you know it’s what it is it’s an add-on so it’s to

[19:55] kind of segue us into you know their next venture whatever which I find you know when you when you’re honest with people and you kind of give that plan I

[20:04] think more people would would buy and respect that versus buying a game and be like oh I in order to get that character I need to pay that $1.99 or wait for

[20:15] that map because my buddy’s playing it because I can’t get it I think audience is far more receptive to certain price points if they feel a level of honesty

[20:26] from the person providing it um whereas if it just feels like they’re trying to keep their hands in your pocket um it it makes the the the

[20:38] consumer a little bit more skeptical you know even to go back to the idea of cable providers and packaging channels and stuff like that it’s like right you

[20:45] guys are doing fine financially like I saw your your you know your quarterly profits and they’re TSX like I can see how well your

[20:55] company’s doing like need but but then at the same time it’s like that’s why they’re doing so well so it’s it’s hard to divide the two and I don’t know there

[21:05] has to be kind of a a balance and I think sometimes and I think the customers and the consumers can see when the balance is tilted

[21:14] to the pursuit of profit as opposed to the pursuit of service for the customer yeah and I can see like I guess the other end of that Spectrum would

[21:24] probably like maybe this is another episode for another time but um Kickstarter right which is kind of the opposite end of okay I can get on the

[21:32] ground floor get the entire game or you know invest this little amount of money on something that’s going to be promised that’s more more often than not it’s

[21:41] about the art of the game or it’s about the essence of a game versus I need to make a ton of money so I can see a lot of people being split right they they

[21:50] buy the big game like Battlefront and they get hit with a pay wall or they buy a little game like Kickstarter uh get in and some of those games well a lot of

[21:59] those games either have delays or they don’t get made or they have to cut back um I’ve had a couple of successes with Kickstarter in um some video games but I

[22:10] like Mighty number nine has been delayed like three or four times uh as a fix it and that was a big one for people of Mega Man um fair to get in on and they

[22:20] expected their product and like I don’t know I I can see everyone’s being pulled in every direction where like usually you would go go to or way back when I

[22:29] was buying games you go to the video game store or wherever you buy your game you take it home that’s your game and you played it for months and you were

[22:37] done now it’s like well what DLC what’s going to break what’s not going to be published what’s yeah it’s it’s like the model of uh games used to be more like

[22:48] like a toy yeah yeah and you would buy it you would enjoy it and then you would be done with it right um we’re now it’s like this model of games as a server

[23:00] um and also games as like more of an experience than a thing that you would like a puzzle or a story or an interactive story um now it’s like this

[23:11] more of a especially like with online games they could be very much like this oh we’re going to provide you a service for

[23:18] multiplayer kind of Esports fun and all this I think that’s valid but on the same hand too there’s just something nice to be like I like what you made

[23:29] there I would like to take that home and enjoy it the Simplicity of that the Simplicity of going to video game store buying a

[23:38] game bringing it home right enjoying it like what’s with the future like like if I pop in and you know like if you went back to your old Xbox 360 and say you

[23:48] bought something was you know online all the time and then their servers are gone then you know is the game kind of cut in half for you or yeah

[23:59] doesn’t function I tend to avoid um like multiplayer only games now because I’ve seen servers die yeah yeah that’s why I like single player games because you

[24:11] don’t need a server it’s you’re just playing the game um I think multiplayer games are a lot of fun um there are some multiplayer

[24:20] games that and like and like I’m saying this as somebody making a multiplayer game I think that they are great but like you need that support if they’re

[24:30] going to be online only right um I think that’s the thing is like you want to make sure that the game has lasting power and that the game can be something

[24:40] that people go back and enjoy on like this craving basis where they’re like oh yeah it’s been like a a year or two since I’ve played that game let’s let’s

[24:50] do a around we used to play it all the time you know let’s let’s let’s let’s do it yeah yeah but like if you have a game that’s based more on like a

[25:00] community of online peers that have all moved on to other things um and that server populated by them then it’s like you and your friend might want to

[25:10] revisit but unless there’s another 62 people to fill the map that would just be me again driving a helicopter or piloting a helicopter

[25:20] smashing into the ground alone yeah but yeah totally totally get your point it’s got to be supported yeah there has to be something going on

[25:31] you know or at least something that you can do offline you know whether it’s offline multiplayer whether it’s a you know single player campaign or offline

[25:39] Co or what have you and those are really intense games too especially if you’ve been off sick or under stress or work related lows or

[25:53] whatever yeah you got to be in that mindset and no breaks yes you just want to sit and just unwind and you know yeah why like uh like just cause is fun for

[26:04] just I just want to fly an airplane under a bridge did they fix that yet yeah they patch it improves the load times and

[26:13] then on top of that I play an offline mode um which helps a lot too because it saves them pinging the server oh right because there’s all these leaderboards

[26:23] for activities so how many kilometers have you driven how many kilometers have you flown how many kilometers have you done this so every single action they’re

[26:31] taking the game is being compared to a leaderboard which just eating up backend resources wow which is a lot of resources to allocate to something that

[26:39] I don’t care yeah wow I’ve flown 177,000 kilometers I might want to you know keep that leaderboard going and yeah it’s like yeah but like I think it should be

[26:50] a thing where you could play an offline mode and then turn off yeah well even like a like a data impact like on your end right because it has to communicate

[26:59] out so I know it’s not going to be that big it’s probably just a text file or whatever but it adds up if it’s real time it just it seemed to really slow

[27:08] things down so I played in offline mode and it works fine now yeah yeah it’s good you’re too lazy to switch discs away from

[27:16] follow yeah right well digital only especially with Dad yeah well yeah trying to think if there was anything else I wanted to

[27:27] mention oh uh just about content and digestability and how much stuff we have there’s one last thing is uh people um who like with

[27:36] Canadian Netflix or just Netflix in general and how like it’s region specific and what library and access you have I remember when Netflix were out

[27:44] all these people were like hey let’s let’s switch our IP address so that way we can oh right yes all that and that always because I was dumbfounded by that

[27:55] because I’ve barely had enough time to enjoy what content we had in one this is before having a kid right how much time do you have to

[28:04] binge watch like 90s sitcoms like why what are you doing like yeah like a series they’re going through Series yeah like I’m all for throwing out a couple

[28:16] episodes of friends or the ex files just for you know the giggles of it all but like when you’re just Marathon Marathon Marathon yeah like I don’t know like I I

[28:27] like watching watching shows and movies as much as the next person but I love when it asks you too like after three or four episodes it’ll be

[28:37] like are you still watching sure are you still watching you sure you don’t want to get up and stretch your legs maybe get

[28:46] outside she 911 just in case press stop are you by episode 407 it’s like we have sent paramedics they’re on their

[28:57] way well I saw someone online too they um they found all the hidden categories on Netflix yeah is that’s why I always hate

[29:06] it that you can’t well you can find what you’re looking for if you know the name of it but it’s not very good at suggesting things like it will take

[29:13] certain things you’ve watched but like sometimes the kids will be on there and they haven’t switched accounts so I have suggestions for Paw Patrol and then like

[29:20] Breaking Bad and um so it gets messed up and you can’t like add or delete them but I think someone’s discovered all their tagging system which is like I

[29:29] don’t know three 4,000 um like tagged categories so you can go on in the back end and select like it’s not as general as action adventure but like ninjas and

[29:40] like old school Bruce Lee or something and it’s got all these other tags but I found that interesting too because yeah I’m curious to to run those filters

[29:49] through to see what ones I’ve missed I’ve scoured quite a bit of like just the genres that I like yeah um but even then is refresh all the time my my list

[30:00] my to watch list is way too long so I hated the impr progress ones too because again like if I jumped into something uh and then jumped out it would sit there

[30:10] just taunting like you accidentally click something yeah yeah and you don’t want anyone to see like whoa sorry I didn’t mean to

[30:18] click that I did not click that I swear to God I did not click that I don’t want to watch Magic School Bus I don’t know what you’re talking about yeah you’re

[30:25] like scrolling and it’s just like it loads up and like yeah no same thing I got nothing against Cat Williams but I’m not

[30:32] watching Cat Williams and like that will throw like a wren the works for your Al here’s all your related stuff and it’s like all these other things come up and

[30:41] I’m like I’m not in that it’s like it’s like you know you accidentally click on like not a not scary movie but the scary movie and like no I don’t want to

[30:55] watch get out of there with that um like with all those Al algorithms and like having it like pre-select stuff make it easy whatever with I hate on Sony so PS4

[31:08] specifically they’ve now added like a community live stream stuff to your games so if you go to like say again Witcher 3 and you go on the icon and

[31:17] it’s got live streams of who’s on Twitch who’s on YouTube who’s playing the game whatever and streaming it they’ll be at a different part of the game possibly

[31:26] ruining it for you you I don’t want the integration there and I don’t think you can turn it off like it’s part of their experience I haven’t really been maybe I

[31:37] have to turn it off we have to look I think I’m oblivious I just like I see icons and stuff underneath but I don’t I just I

[31:48] get it and hit go I don’t really care well I don’t want to watch someone playing the game I want to play why would you put it there put it in another

[31:59] spot or like a like a related game maybe I don’t know it in the UI exactly like everything else you go down and there’s like right directly

[32:09] below it’s like you know play view streams like okay right right like either play it yourself or watch somebody else play it right but instead

[32:18] of having like the actual footage icons up like a screenshot of it yeah yeah which is like the ending of the game oh great thanks thanks buddy oh great Star

[32:27] Wars spoilers right there awesome well now I know who I know what you know kylo Ren is Kaiser s awesome spoiler alert sorry spoiler

[32:41] alert kylo Ren is Kaiser s maybe on the on that note that Star Wars note of the spoiler note don’t look it up um we’ll end our Twan show there
