[0:00] and uncharted 4 tonight midnight oh yeah are you saying

[0:06] preload is there going to be a tired dad tomorrow probably

[0:14] are you going to uh call in uh sick yeah right after this broadcast oh sorry i just can’t make it in

[0:22] towards the end of this broadcast you have to start just coughing like oh guys i just i feel like i’m coming down with something oh this illness is has not yet

[0:32] been charted right yeah

[0:41] let’s let’s get this thing rolling the adult beverages are poured the babies are asleep and it is time for new dad gaming a show about fatherhood gaming

[0:51] and new dads figuring out their gaming lives my name is trevor and i have an 11th month 11 month old my name is gavin and i have a nine month

[1:01] old and i’m jeff i have a five-year-old and a three-year-old and choked on the 11th

[1:10] almost one so those oh man that’s it’s a state of tired that just like starts to make your tongue

[1:18] flail about in inappropriate manners whoa okay come on hey whoa hey

[1:27] my insinuation is fine yours is school the you act really differently when you get

[1:35] tired i tend to just want to have a nap but you know to each their own during a game yeah exactly

[1:45] time to go to bed put on a little bit of light dark souls to allow me to sleep and yeah yeah i can

[1:52] i can only sleep with a game over screen in front of me it’s uh it’s ever since a battle toad stays it’s how i get to sleep

[1:59] sounds like if that was the case i think you would you would wake up and see game over and you might think that you’ve died

[2:06] like oh no like in in real life yeah you wake up and look at the screen like oh god it’s over so this is how it ends huh

[2:15] no tunnel there’s no white light i have to go towards it’s what i press x to respawn is this if i if i hit y to respond do i get to

[2:24] kind of respawn as a cooler animal like you know like a lion or something how does this work you’re desperately hitting the konami code just in case so

[2:32] you can jump out yeah yeah yeah yeah use economic code for like the ultimate reincarnation just come back as like

[2:38] the sun

[2:46] yeah that’s it that took a left turn in albuquerque yeah uh so gentlemen how was your week in gaming and fatherhood

[2:58] uh jeff you are welcome to go first oh well start yeah uh fatherhood fatherhood i guess we’ll mention that it was mother’s day this past weekend so

[3:08] the boys had um crafts they did it from school and daycare did your ranches no no we didn’t have a tent full of kids

[3:20] um but i will say that um all the crafts involved popsicle sticks and glue guns and

[3:27] glitter of some sort um hey they gave that yeah welcome guys just get ready yeah um yeah so they gave

[3:36] those gifts uh to their mom early in the morning and then we um sat down for breakfast kind of spent the

[3:43] day chill kind of load back laid back we went for a walk you know nature all that jazz easy stuff um

[3:52] but it was good uh family was together we went to the mother-in-law’s to celebrate mother’s day over there

[3:58] uh all around good fun um in terms of gaming i did play the overwatch beta by the way i’m not so sold on it

[4:09] damn i think they missed my target audience i don’t know like they’re not it’s not for me i don’t think it’s

[4:16] um it’s got an aesthetic that’s almost too cartoony for me and then it’s just if you’ve ever played it it’s just

[4:24] a full of just claustrophobic just you’re just on screen just shooting and i have no idea what’s going on maybe it takes

[4:32] some uh getting used to but i found it very tight very like all the maps were cramped i’m used to

[4:38] battlefront and battlefield wide open crazy 64 maps and this is basically like six versus six or something like that a bunch of cats in a room

[4:52] so it didn’t really sell it for me i don’t know and then it’s like a full-priced game i think on consoles too like 60

[4:58] bucks or something and it’s yeah i don’t know it wasn’t the best experience but yeah it’s a free beta maybe things will change yeah man i

[5:05] said that’s such like the opposite experience that i had although it was funny though like as much as anything i’m going to say

[5:12] yeah overwatch as much as as much praise as i’ll give it i’m having a real hard time thinking about buying it i’ll say that i wish i hadn’t bought

[5:20] battleborn wait hadn’t bought um

[5:32] for me like battle overwatch is just joy in a game

[5:38] namely like the the charm like it’s about in a world of negativity and battlefronts and in um call of duty’s

[5:48] like the vicious metal version of gaming like raw and vicious and like screw you noobs like kill you like this is a this is like stepping into a pixar movie

[6:01] that is even more geared towards adults as far as like winks and nudges like it’s about fun and like beautiful aesthetics and having a

[6:10] great time like some some of the minor points too is that you’re getting into a match and

[6:15] as you’re choosing your characters it’s saying like oh you know your team doesn’t have any tanks or doesn’t have any healing characters

[6:22] and because of that i in the game i was actually able to choose a the healing character because no one else had chosen one and like it was

[6:30] amazing like i was running around just helping everybody out much like the medic in team fortress 2 which i think this game has a lot of interesting

[6:36] parallels to but participating going into that what’s that did you make anybody a chair nobody’s a chair in this one

[6:46] distracted so he’s going around helping people again i mean come on that’s the thing like that’s what i mean it’s like he

[6:53] seems he gravitates towards um like the dad role it’s the parent role he’s like okay guys we need a healer i’ll be the healer like i don’t

[7:02] want to play with him i wish it could be something that noble it’s more because as a healing character it’s not quite revealed how

[7:10] awful you are because you’re just assisting everybody else who’s good at shooting people and since i suck at it i just have to like

[7:17] heal everybody up and assist my team but actually i appreciate that there’s because there’s some roles that you can do where even if you’re not that great

[7:24] you can still contribute to it but you get to the end of the message so what you’re saying is you’re the kid on

[7:30] the hockey team who showed up with the orange wedges damn right and again the water and the gatorade

[7:37] those water bottles for you coach i got right guys i i brought the gatorade you just keep me on the team please and we got to the end of the match and

[7:46] it’s it just seems like the entire thing is geared towards positivity like beyond the aesthetics beyond the

[7:52] um charm and the way the animations of the even the kills and everything goes about it’s you know that joy and that charm that picks our

[7:59] happiness then you even get to the end of the match and it’s a voting system you say okay who had the player who who was somebody gets to play

[8:06] the game just by virtue of who had an incredible kill streak or something that note it’s chosen by the game but there’s another

[8:13] fashion is just totally broken that character is broken they always win is he overpowered at this point bastion

[8:22] oh yeah the guy that can turn into a turret yeah he’s awesome line up your shot and just everything’s bottlenecks right so people just come in like a like

[8:30] a lineup and it just rails them buddies you can fix that stuff they can give it to you on the aesthetic right like the aesthetic is great it’s fun

[8:38] it’s positive but i found when i got in there there’s like no strategy you just go in and pump away you’re healing you’re running

[8:46] around healing if you’re you know like the support or armor guys you just i don’t know yeah like fortress was something you had to

[8:58] sort of eventually figure out the strategy for like there was the whole like you know the medic and the tank put them together and

[9:05] like that that relationship wasn’t straight out of the box understood a lot of those relationships are kind of like

[9:13] figured out and those strategies were figured out during the uh you know the user experience and like

[9:20] the players just kind of getting their teeth into it um hopefully battleborn has the same sort of thing there could be a lot of

[9:26] like hidden strategy and balance stuff that is yet to reveal itself but like yeah it’s

[9:33] i do like the idea too that like they have this sort of uh recommendation system in regards to the balance of the team like how many of

[9:41] what character versus how many of another um i think that could help with the strategy as well i think if people start to really utilize that and be like

[9:48] oh what about and um were you able to see the other team sort of build because that would be a good strategy too if you kind of see it’s like oh they have a lot

[9:57] of this they’re pretty heavy with this we can counter by having more of this so people load up with this character and we’ll be better off for it because they

[10:05] don’t have enough that’s that class yeah not uh not so much i think it’s like only for you can see what you’re on your team

[10:14] well that’s just the thing right you respawn and you can change like so you’re not set up with it any game but i don’t know i found even with battlefield

[10:22] if i’m the medic or an armored guy or assault i found more strategy maybe because the larger maps maybe because the overwatch

[10:32] is so like it’s all choke points everything’s choked but it’s really small so you’ll you’ll have a sniper you’ll

[10:38] have the healer right behind the big machine guy and you’ll just do that the whole match is what i found in my experience but

[10:47] maybe i’m playing the wrong people i don’t know yeah yeah i don’t know i think the um i found it pretty varied in the number

[10:54] of it like i and even within one game i had been a couple games i was a healer and the second time it just didn’t matter like

[11:00] we were just getting slaughtered the next time i was trying to be a tank guy first time it worked out great i just was racking them up next turn i couldn’t

[11:07] seem to do it to save my life because the other team had a healer and then we didn’t and then none of us like because there

[11:13] wasn’t you know teams aren’t really i don’t think it was much like gavin said as far as figuring out the strategy i don’t think a lot of people are really

[11:20] talking that much in it that i noticed where they’re not saying okay listen somebody become a healer please because we’re

[11:27] we’re hurting here like we’re getting slaughtered but i don’t know there’s something in my subtle strategies as opposed to

[11:35] an absolute requirement for it and so a certain simplicity that it would bring forth along with all of again the joy and the positivity and everything

[11:45] else and the one thing i tried to mention again is just like around at the end of the match you vote for your teammate who had a great game and i

[11:51] actually won one of those things which was you know wonderful never expected to do it as far as me and these games like that was

[11:58] fantastic because that was when i was a healer because i was i smoked i did a phenomenal get job of it and everyone like made it helping yeah yeah then i

[12:05] got like extra loot for it so which just represents like skins and other costumes for various characters you can do these spray paint things

[12:13] so yeah i’d have a hard time although it comes down to okay

[12:20] am i ready to drop 60 bucks on it yeah i don’t know i just don’t know that i’d do it often enough to bother and with i got burnt so badly with battlefront

[12:31] although that’s it’s certainly an entirely different game but i think it spoke to the prom i have with these type of shooters and that is not something

[12:38] i’m gonna keep going back to yeah yeah i could see it forty dollars maybe you know forty dollar price but yeah i kind of i don’t wanna

[12:48] piss people off but i would say it’s like the rocket league of shooters so it’s fun to get into fun like aesthetic it’s really kind of

[12:56] just everything’s positive like trevor’s saying um but i don’t know i think after a while it just seems flat it’s just like i don’t know that you’ll

[13:06] get that much more out of it but i could be wrong like that’s just me i think that’s it i think i think it’s a very apt comparison but it also point to

[13:15] how much we’ve all played rocket league now and like how much that has had and how much joy that’s

[13:21] been although the price point is also something that’s by comparison worse because i think rocket league

[13:29] is free ps4 folks even at full price i think the thing was like 30 bucks i don’t think it

[13:37] ever reached 60. no no no i think it also comes down to what sort of um

[13:43] like post release support it will get um and how much of it’s going to be paid dlc and how much of it is just going to

[13:51] be included um that i think will help kind of lessen the blow of the price tag

[13:59] they’re also doing all this secondary uh media with it like the the animated shorts and stuff like that so

[14:08] that’s kind of also where some of the cost is coming from but like how much of that is exclusive to the people who actually buy it and how

[14:16] much can just be accessed online by way of youtube you know and legally i might add like it’s i think it’s

[14:25] if they’re able to provide a good entertainment value then great but yeah it’s hard with multiplayer games to really get that price point just right

[14:34] because you don’t know it’s all dependent on the audience and the enthusiasm of the audience because

[14:40] that’s what makes it a good experience you can make a really good interesting well-built multiplayer experience but there’s no audience for it it’s going to

[14:49] drift away um i remember playing crisis 2 like years ago and it had some really cool innovative online stuff with map movement uh being

[14:59] able to traverse and like grab onto ledges and hop up or do like a power slide and shoot a shotgun at the same time basically a lot of the really cool

[15:08] like forward momentum kinetic feel that the new call of duty’s have like crytek was doing it like a half

[15:16] decade ago um but like they just didn’t have the online support in regards to community

[15:23] and i had a single player right like all these other ones single-player overwatch is going to have just multiplayer only

[15:30] so even with well and are they doing local support because i don’t think they are right i don’t think so i don’t believe so now

[15:40] trying to think like is that my baby or like which babies get those like dad reactions now

[15:47] like any time i hear a baby crying and it could be mine it’s just like you know you get that adrenaline spike like does that was that it was that

[15:54] oh god you start sweating your heart is it dad time yeah now speaking of the dead angle though i could half imagine if you were

[16:01] really hurting for a shooter and you had a game and you know jeff i think especially with your hosts as far as kids

[16:07] closing in on the gaming age you can imagine if you really wanted a first-person shooter fix or multi-player fighter like this one you could you

[16:17] could imagine overwatch being a much better fit for a family household as opposed to the new call of duty

[16:25] yeah yeah the new yes well the new call of duty looks like crap in one word but um uh yeah it would be a good fit and i

[16:35] even let them play battlefront 2 because it’s star wars lasers there’s no real blood like they can run around and it’s all that theme right but with

[16:46] the games coming out like two announcements this week with call of duty infinite war and battlefield 1 again i don’t get that naming system

[16:54] but call of duty infinite war looks like i don’t know unreal tournament in space again

[17:01] which i don’t think is what people want and it looks dated and ugly and old and at least for battlefield one it

[17:11] looks new but it’s world war one so that’s kind of a different experience going back to their

[17:16] roots almost so yeah and with the world war one look a lot more exciting amazing than especially the song they really

[17:25] they really bumped it up because realistically world war one was just a lot of trench warfare and just literally throwing bodies at each other

[17:34] um and it was horrible and like it was just it was really really horrible like it was the invention of the machine gun

[17:42] so it was like everybody was trying to get their heads around this thing that was just mowing down infantry so like when you watch movies like

[17:50] gallipoli for example like that was a really good portrayal of um of world war one and just like how the aussies were just

[17:59] the british were just like yeah just throw more aussies at them and yeah yeah don’t give up um

[18:05] but then it’s a dirty war right it was a dirty grungy war and i’m really curious to see their take on it because like right now um

[18:12] uh to kind of segue into what i’ve been playing this week is i started uh valiant hearts um oh yeah you saw

[18:20] about world war one and of course i start playing that around the same time that this trailer comes out and like these are totally different wars just in

[18:28] the how they’re being shown but i’m curious to see what sort of creative liberties they’re gonna take to keep it exciting in regards to a

[18:36] multiplayer aspect um and how much historical accuracy they’re gonna have with like the equipment because it’s not like you really had some the the guns

[18:44] were still pretty rudimentary like it wasn’t like with like with world war ii style shooters you had the thompson

[18:51] and the thompson machine gun was like that that’s a that and the uh uh the carbine it’s like the five shot clip and then it pings when it pops out yeah it’s

[19:00] a beautiful use like it’s really fun in a video game um so like you had some very very

[19:07] interesting weapons there like the springfield sniper rifle like world war ii had a really neat armory but i don’t think uh gamers especially even myself

[19:16] are as familiar with the armory and the tool set that was used in world war one and i’m wondering like how

[19:23] much of it’s going to be historically accurate uh you saw in the clip a little bit of use of like entrenching tools as weapons

[19:30] because that was very common uh there was like the trench gun uh which is basically just combat shotgun there was a lot of

[19:39] like mustard gas being used it looked like mustard gas or something yeah like oh god that was totally mustard gas so it’s

[19:46] it’s there’s some pretty horrible things so i’m really curious to see like what of it and it would

[19:54] actually be in their benefit if they could provide little like i don’t know like within like a codex in the menu system where you go and check

[20:02] out like hey like was it like what’s the story behind this weapon like what yeah you know the actual rather

[20:09] than like oh we made up a really cool gun so yeah the world war one in space this is just

[20:18] world war one it’s gonna say like you could not have two crazy divergent different

[20:26] takes on the next war game one being going back to retread and the other one being spacey spacey shoot shoot and it’s curious

[20:36] of the two you guys seem to be so enamored with going back to world war one and more curious about how they would

[20:44] show what is historically accurate to that time in that battle as opposed to what could be

[20:50] in the future well it’s because creative limitations are interesting like if you have when you’re given

[20:58] kind of just carte blanche you do whatever you want with creativity because it’s the future so no one’s going to hold your feet to

[21:04] the fire uh no one’s going to show poor point of order on stuff that’s yet to be um

[21:11] with that sort of pun unless you get it right or unless you get it like you do it really really well

[21:18] um people are gonna be like yeah okay i’ve seen that before like sci-fi space shooters have been around

[21:25] for so long because they’ve been done like to death and then again um and actually the one thing i was

[21:33] actually a little disappointed in when i saw the call of duty trailer is it was the teaser one was about like the uh

[21:40] the settlement defense force i think was the name of the the group and there’s like this bald guy talking about we will crush you and stuff like that

[21:48] but i actually was kind of intrigued i’m like okay wait a second like everyone’s like this is the bad guy i’m like what if it’s not what if this

[21:56] is the good guy and where’s the settlement but no no hear me out what if this the settlement uh defense force is earth

[22:03] colonizing alien planets and we’re oh there you go with the indigenous populations of those planets and basically us saying we will build

[22:12] monuments to your destruction it’s like what if they’re going to do like interstellar inter like

[22:19] like xeno battles like that idea of okay we’re going to war against an alien race how would humanity do that and from the

[22:28] perspective of like the call of duty franchise so when i first saw that and everyone’s like oh that’s a bad guy i’m like i hope it isn’t like i hope that

[22:34] this is actually the good guy this is us threatening the bad guy and telling them how much we’re going to kick them into the ground and then when they just came

[22:42] out that’s just humans shooting each other again i’m like oh they’re yeah they missed it i got my hopes up yeah so i’m like

[22:50] we’re going to be like the vicious colonial group that’s coming in and we’re going to be it’s kind of like the vietnam war but instead of fighting

[23:00] you know the vietnam war it’s vietnam war again it’s very um like when i got i got excited so i’m like is this going to be the starship

[23:07] troopers game we’ve always wanted because starship troopers was very much like that like the terran race the humans trying to

[23:14] really colonize areas that they weren’t welcome in um and that pushback that happened and that idea of what happens when we

[23:21] certainly tread into territory that might not be open for grabs um but then they’re just like no no it’s two different human groups up here in

[23:30] space yeah it’s like like well fighting aliens that’s a little

[23:37] far-fetched like you have space battles i think in one part of the trailer he broke the spacesuit like the guy’s neck in space yeah like in a vacuum he

[23:46] twisted his neck like huh so he could have gone for the

[23:52] ripping the helmet off like classic space thing you know just you have to do the steven seagal version yeah of like murdering them in space

[24:02] a bit of a bit of a waste of your surroundings phil what do they have this one oh

[24:08] was it shattered horizon i think the name of the game was basically the idea was it was an online multiplayer shooter that took place in

[24:15] zero gravity was no sound um because you’re in the vacuum of space it was like a bunch of people in spacesuits fighting around like the moon got broken

[24:24] in half because of mining and it was like this it was back when like directx 11 was first coming out so it was all like it

[24:33] was it was kind of a tech demo but it was also a game but it had like basically zero gravity gun fights

[24:40] in space and it looked beautiful and looked really fun and like what you would when you take down somebody they would just kind of drift away like you

[24:49] know like george clooney whoa spoilers yes no that sounds he didn’t mention what

[24:58] film that was that was uh ocean’s 12. in space in space space diamond the heist oh god

[25:20] yeah i can’t say i have any any interest in getting either one of those so be if anything i’ll just be it’ll be

[25:27] fun to watch the those two games duke it out as far as charts and like attention and then just what becomes of could this be the

[25:35] misstep that finally takes down the franchise of call of duty probably not it’s probably gonna sell very well not going to be able to yeah

[25:44] yeah yeah well even when like the last one that black ops 3 when it first debuted everyone’s like oh fighting robots

[25:54] it’s like the best-selling one to date it’s like the the correlation between people’s enjoyment of the trailer and the sales are so disproportionate that

[26:03] there’s no way that we can kind of make any kind of judgment calls just wait and see what happens but i’m kind of with trevor on this like i don’t really have

[26:11] a vested interest i’m not really going to pick either one up um immediately i might look into

[26:20] battlefield but either way it’s unless they have a decent single player campaign because my multiplayer online stuff is kind of

[26:28] set aside for the time being until you know i’m not too busy with you know life and work

[26:35] um i’m kind of sticking to single player experiences for the moment because i can pause and leave and not leave anybody

[26:41] hanging last thing i want is you know log out you’re like where’s the medic i’m bleeding out who’s right here

[26:49] gap in the medic is left oh no we’re done we’re done for we’re in space here we need a medic where’s our oxygen guy yeah he’s afk

[26:57] he’s gone he’s just you know what i um geez what a bizarre time it is as far as that such a crazy push for on like multiple

[27:07] online multiplayer at the moment so like battleborn overwatch uh new call of duty games are obviously coming out yeah

[27:16] splatoon like it’s just like constantly this constant barrage of new games that are trying to get everybody online and then in some ways

[27:25] it fits like the dad time frame because as long as these matches are like you know like five minutes or less or

[27:31] ten minutes like great get in get a hit have a good time go back to bed or you know deal with the diaper but um

[27:38] yeah it almost feels like just tonal tonally tonality tonally it’s not sitting well even if i what’s that

[27:46] mobular

[27:58] doesn’t seem there’s a lot of stuff that strikes that from a tone perspective something that like really sits well with

[28:05] not enough that seems never mind i should retract that a bit and say it’s a bit more personal i would find a bit

[28:12] odd to be doing father-like stuff and then coming down into a call of duty

[28:17] fighting teenagers getting sworn at with grade school curses and murdering people as opposed to something a bit more

[28:26] you know friendly like overwatch and everything else but yeah it’s such a bizarre time with just the sheer wealth of it and the

[28:33] expectation about what you’d have to do to get into them and be good but uh that’s the thing too is your com it’s a competitive

[28:40] game like there’s there’s kind of two different ways of gaming there’s like i want a game to just experience something

[28:46] narratively or just to challenge myself um but then there’s others where it’s like multiplayer is a form of competition

[28:54] and your competition the vast majority of them have no responsibilities in their life they don’t have to walk a dog they don’t

[29:01] have to change a diaper they don’t have to go do a job they don’t have to run their own business there’s no they have zero they

[29:08] might have to take garbage there should be a handicap you set the handicap to dad level and it just gives you like a thousand health and like

[29:18] unlimited ammo that like doubles for every kid every additional kid you have yeah yeah three kids oh jeez just wow just give them the bazooka and let them

[29:29] have some fun this man needs it just let him have it please dude needs a win just give it to him

[29:37] yeah i think that’s the thing is like i think that’s also what kind of had me drift away from the online multiplayer which i used to

[29:44] really thoroughly love like and for a very long time i remember playing red faction on the pc like the original oh it was so good yeah like actually so

[29:55] thrilled about like blowing a hole in a catwalk and watching somebody fall through it and be like yeah you know and uh stuff like that was

[30:02] really really fun cathartic but um i just i don’t have the time to get as good at them as i can

[30:11] or as i need to be to get the most out of the experience and i think that’s the thing is like if you if you can’t reach that learning

[30:17] curve you don’t get that experience and then it’s kind of lost on you even if you start to it starts to warp some of the matchmaking which i think

[30:26] they need to get a little more clever at but if you over a long course of time put in some amount of effort into it like eventually you start to raise

[30:33] especially the current kind of experience models like you start to raise rank so okay now you’re level two level three

[30:39] level four level five and it’s it’s not that i’m level five like i’m not that good it’s just like i’ve managed to put in played that much i finally got in

[30:48] like let’s say 10 hours so now you’re going up against people of that same level that are actually supposed to be at that

[30:55] level and they’re just wiping the floor with you so like there’s almost like this if implemented incorrectly there’s just

[31:00] almost this timeline where like this period where like it just stops getting good unless like you reset your

[31:07] account like you’re gonna be put in and match with people who are of a certain skill level that you achieved just by showing up often enough

[31:14] like it almost needs a more nuanced approach to it where it’s just like look i am not good this is just supposed to be casual like i’m looking for some fun

[31:21] you know what i mean like this guy’s put in this much time but he’s still this bad we should match him with these type of

[31:26] people so so that he can still have some fun as opposed to he’s a he’s a rank uh 10 so let’s

[31:34] put him into the high level yeah the tens plus it’s a bit of a perishable skill set you know like if you’ve played for a

[31:41] bit and then you take like a month or so off and you play something else and then your button mappings all messed up and then you go to pick it up again you’re

[31:47] like oh wait oh yeah you don’t jump with a y in this one it’s okay yeah never mind i just okay how do i sprint like so you’re playing almost like a first

[31:57] time player but you kept the rank from when you’re playing it like once a day and but you’re not that good anymore you’ve forgotten everything

[32:06] and that i think that’s rough too it’s like they should have like a timer where it’s like your rank will will go down the longer you’re away from it like it

[32:14] can tell it’s like yeah you’re rusty we’re gonna put the training wheels back on you can come back at it and uh go from there

[32:21] that’s something that’s really bothersome with uh battlefront stuff too yeah it’s like it’s like if you’re good enough you get all these extra ranks

[32:29] and as soon as you get this rank you get something that allows you to kill people more efficiently well yeah that’s like i need that not you exactly you’re

[32:38] really killing people i need the help why do you think they need to really reverse the powers the power up system right when you start you have all the

[32:46] power-ups and then when you get better you take away the power-ups because if you get to like level 50 and you’re killing everyone left right and center

[32:53] you have a shield you have a jet you have a gun that’s like a one shot kill why do you need that you don’t need it should be the other way you have the

[33:01] newbie with one shot kill they they’re using it as like a carrot on a stick to keep you playing but the problem like the other method though if you

[33:08] if it’s proportionate to the skill level and giving the person with the skill the tools they need to succeed and the person who doesn’t need those tools

[33:15] taking it away you’re also kind of saying it’s like all right here’s all the carrots and we’re going to take them away one at a time the more you play

[33:23] it’s like more characters we need more carrots just different ones like different costume carrots different looks i think that’s the one thing is

[33:30] like um the one thing i have to say about like halo um was it was always fairly good about it’s

[33:37] you could show how much of a badass you were with your arm reloaded it never affected it was just strictly

[33:45] cosmetic but you see somebody would have this really cool armor and it’s like yeah it doesn’t affect anything they’re still just as vulnerable as you they’re

[33:54] still just as deadly as you maybe more so but that’s just due to practice it was solely

[34:01] when you picked up a weapon in the corner of the room it was the same weapon you just got to it first there’s nothing like

[34:08] it’s not like with battlefield and stuff where the more you play you get a better weapon it’s like better weapons

[34:15] now now they have access to something that i don’t so now they’ve got an advantage over me plus skill it’s like okay

[34:23] that’s kind of what chased me away from call of duty as i remember one time i was playing and it’s like i couldn’t stay inside because the guys

[34:29] with the shotguns kept killing me i couldn’t run outside because there was five different helicopters shooting at me

[34:35] like what do i do you just see you running around in circles like i know that’s it yeah exactly it’s like

[34:43] i can’t stay indoors i’m just getting just murdered and then i’m like i need some distance and i try to get distance between me and

[34:50] them and just and again just i mean circle it around that’s again why if if

[34:56] if even not your speed or your particular game i think it’s why games like overwatch and it’s hopeful success is reassuring

[35:04] because it is it’s not there’s no super power ups if you’re really great or if you’ve done it a long time it’s about fun

[35:10] it’s about positivity in supporting one another and like upvoting everybody like hey great game that type of stuff in in akin to rocket league and rocket

[35:18] league being in that same vein so as opposed to call of duty like it’s success of something like overwatch i

[35:25] think would hopefully bring about more games that could be a bit lend itself a bit more to the type of timelines

[35:32] and advancement that we could possibly get within these type of shooters yeah it’s probably coming in at a good time right

[35:40] that one confused with battleborn i don’t nice yeah same kind of name to them and the look is similar and i don’t know

[35:48] yeah i want to give that one a shake too but it feels like that’s more like league of legends and dota meets a first person shoulder and those two games are

[35:56] so beyond any level comprehension i have like it’s it’s a next level gamer and i just don’t got it so i don’t know i’d like to give it a

[36:06] shake i gave it i tried the trial and i was so confused as to what the heck was happening yeah i was just running

[36:15] things kept happening on screen and i just kept getting dragged along and things every now and then i killed something

[36:21] but not that often because the other guys were much better than i was although we’re on a team it was yeah i think i put down the controller and

[36:29] like walked down the room like after his finish like huh well that was a thing okay it’s like it’s one of those old moments

[36:36] where it’s just like have i have i gotten so old and so bad at things that this is beyond me i was like no no it’s the kids that are wrong

[36:47] i’m still cool i’m still with it what’s it fleek i’m still on fleek oh god that’s long past now they probably have another word you know that yeah

[36:56] database online see um yeah so i mean we heard a bit about your

[37:03] mother’s day jeff oh yeah yeah so i in our preamble up to the starting of

[37:10] the show i mentioned i don’t say i blew it i just don’t think i did a wonderful job of my wife’s first mother’s day sounded like gavin per

[37:18] facebook post from your wife you did a fabulous job so would you like to describe what uh what you did

[37:26] and i could take notes i just like this simple i got her some uh some nice gifts and bath stuff and a little bottle of champagne uh and some

[37:36] framed photos of willow and stuff like that and then uh uh yeah i

[37:42] made her breakfast and we hadn’t blue plastic hold on you blew past that pretty quick but all those are pretty nice things

[37:49] like and you know like framed photos that meant a lot to her and that will cherish forever and uh bath balls and uh like the photo that’s a that’s

[37:58] incredibly nice that’s a great uh it’s a great angle yeah i was actually kind of sneaky about it too because we had some picture frames kicking around that still

[38:05] had the placeholder like yes you know yesterday yeah you have like a frame and it’s been like on a shelf for a couple years

[38:12] because you buy a frame you’re like oh we should get a photo for that and you forget and then like you get to know like the

[38:16] models that they have in the photo frame you’re just like imaginary cousin derek yeah

[38:23] um so we had a couple of those kicking around and i uh i swapped out the photo with actual family and uh

[38:30] and then yeah i just i did that a day or so ahead of schedule um because i just want to make sure it got done as well um and i was kind of banking on the fact

[38:39] that we’re both really busy and by the time she got around to being in the room that they were in the lights would probably be off she wouldn’t notice and

[38:45] luckily she didn’t but that had really nothing to do other than just time of day um but yeah i did that and i got her a

[38:53] frame photo as well for her to have it work to uh to show off and whatnot so oh

[39:08] yeah and then yeah need some omelettes and whatnot and that was good yeah got her some stuff to just kind of kick back and relax and

[39:17] you know kind of pretty simple and then we we had a nice little um we went out to see her mom and uh and

[39:24] some other family uh and then willow got her a wonderful gift um because during the car ride willow decided to barf

[39:32] yeah everywhere god so much love she just threw up for me i made it myself

[39:42] buckets of love so uh basically um my wife was in the car cleaning the baby i’m on the side of the road with a roll of shop towels that i just luckily had

[39:52] in the trunk and a bottle of water rinsing out of car seat new dead yeah yes

[39:59] keep in your trunk bottle of water roll the shop towels clean up anything uh so yeah we actually her and i handled

[40:08] the disaster quite well um we both kind of just grabbed a task that needed to be done just handled it and got the baby uh like she was smart enough to have a

[40:18] change of clothes in the diaper bag also another pro tip oh um and yeah between having the

[40:28] ability like the equipment to clean up the mess in the trunk and the spare set of clothes to reset the baby uh we were able to get back on the road

[40:37] and continue because this happened on the way to the thing so it was like we were literally 10 minutes on the road on our way out and then all of a sudden

[40:45] absolutely lovely uh and it was just basically the baby was just too full um like it was just full of

[40:52] food there was not enough time between the feed and car you squish it out in the car seat you’re like that’s not tight enough

[41:02] yeah so uh yeah that’s stop and go toronto traffic uh oh god a little rough on the baby tummy so uh poor little peanut though but she

[41:11] took it like like she tough little nut like she uh she parked pretty hard um it was pretty pretty horrifying

[41:20] um but she she didn’t really cry or anything you know like it was just like wow baby that was intense and like if i hadn’t done that as a grown man i would

[41:30] probably be crying right curled up in a ball oh easily uh

[41:38] but uh but no then we did manage to get out see family had a wonderful afternoon and then uh came on home and uh we literally went to bed pretty close

[41:48] after her we’re just like we’re done this is a long long day long weekend a lot of excitement wow right there so sounds like a lot hey trevor

[41:59] just you know nothing weird i just got a he’s got bob seeger favorite ours to come in and serenade her to sleep and uh

[42:06] just had roses thrown about the entire backyard and a helicopter to uh drop not a big nothing big nothing so did you make her something out of

[42:14] macaroni or something like that so construction paper accordion i wish i wish i was that creative this time

[42:22] so how much hot glue did you use not enough not enough that’s the problem so like i i got a little bit of tunnel vision

[42:30] because it was our anniversary and our anniversary falls on the fourth and this year that ended up being like well

[42:37] i think it was like three days difference from mother’s day so i had like laser focus on that to make sure i nailed that one right

[42:44] and which by the way like apparently we’re in our ninth year and i think it ends up being there’s a there’s a gift for every year apparently i think like

[42:51] this year was like linen or pottery it’s a really weird list where is this there is a chart but i have never followed it

[43:00] the best part that was like diamond is like 60th oh perfect you don’t get it until you’re dead

[43:06] like it’s perfect it was definitely made by a man it’s like the first ones are like paper and like cardboard like copper

[43:14] like what’s going to do with copper here’s some wiring darling so the hang that picture with the copper wire

[43:22] yeah we did pretty well for the anniversary that was a really wonderful night um and

[43:27] like gifts but i i’d burn i’d focus so much on that we had like this great dinner and i’d gotten a surprise here with flowers in the morning tulips which

[43:34] are our favorite um and then you’re like oh yeah you’re a mom now yeah just i was like

[43:42] damn it like i’ve used up one of those is for your mother’s day just flowers

[43:48] because all this fails like as a real like from an honest point as far as like you know i got you these flowers because you

[43:54] mean so much to me like i want you to understand that but like if you’ve done it already it’s like okay that’s gone and cards are gone and then daycare

[44:04] with my son put together this mother’s day card with his handprints so there’s baby craft gone so i can’t like that would have been

[44:12] like an easy out just like grab his hand and slap it on some paper like ah mommy mommy’s first and then further we went to we

[44:20] celebrated up at my parents place which is up way up north um they live in a cottage so i had like

[44:28] no i gotta sneak out for a coffee and try to put something together i got nothing surrounded so the whole time i’m just

[44:34] like my mind is sitting there furiously thinking like what can i do so i think more than anything i i

[44:42] was honest up with her around like you know i kind of fired all the bullets for the anniversary yeah

[44:49] don’t have much but let’s uh you know let’s go out and spend the day together at kensington we’ll grab a meal but uh is there anything else you want

[44:56] to do and just ultimately had a a very pleasant like day together that’s right

[45:03] that it it ended up very nice i can relate to your problem because actually uh my wife’s birthday was not too long ago

[45:11] and i too had kind of like spent a lot of my ideas so when it came to like trying to think of things for mother’s day the proximity

[45:19] of like those two events was it left me tough but i had enough buffer between the two to kind of and also resources of not being in the backwoods

[45:28] um to kind of cobble together something that that ended up working um but

[45:34] yeah there is that sort of that like i i did all those things i really want to do for you uh to show you how much i care and how

[45:41] how special you are but like it’s like your brain needs that time to reset and re-accumulate those like like oh i remember you mentioning

[45:49] you you needed a new one of those or i remember you mentioning you liked that thing but not enough time has transpired between those two events that you’re

[45:56] like you haven’t built up those those ideas yet um but like because yours were like literally

[46:03] 36 72 hours apart something like that so it was like yeah that was kind of tough and it’s gonna happen now every year though so i’m gonna have to yeah next

[46:14] year like when i’m planning the anniversary and this is the first time that i’d ever come across this but next time i’m playing the anniversary it’s

[46:20] like all right anniversary mother’s day what is a host of great things i can do split it in half and then separate it between the two

[46:29] days so i’m just going to make sure for the anniversary it’s not a card from my son saying you’re the best mom ever yeah

[46:35] that’s uh that’s a few days early let’s tomorrow isn’t that that’s like year like 13 or something isn’t it it’s literally a paper one and that’s got to

[46:44] be the funniest like yeah imagine either wallpaper or a card like happy anniversary

[46:52] it is a it is a bizarre list i mean there’s like well if you do it wrong enough the paper will just be divorce papers

[47:00] goddammit so we’re going to bring up this i’m curious i want to read some of this series

[47:10] gift list here we go

[47:20] this is from this is from a hallmark so you know that it’s good oh no buy a card buy another card

[47:28] okay get this so this is from hallmark so they’ve given the traditional then they’ve given a modern list beside it oh i’ll say they’re modern they’re

[47:35] modern their modern ones are garbage goat one’s a goat and today it’s like i would at least be cute especially get like a baby goat to be like oh

[47:44] yeah okay so cause let’s say i’ll i’ll say some of those are just some of their new ones

[47:50] are garbage but like for most prominently the first year traditionally is a paper anniversary hey we made it here’s some paper

[48:00] but the new modern one is clocks what yeah congratulations on surviving a year here’s a countdown to the second one

[48:10] bam cluck but it’s what we have okay these are listed in order paper cotton leather fruit

[48:18] flowers wood candy or iron those two are close together candy or iron not both candy coated iron

[48:31] and a trip to the dentist oh god the modern version of that the modern version in the seventh year is a desk set

[48:39] what how what’s the next list sponsored by ikea they’ve got the hallmark list and the

[48:44] ikea list like i’m trying to think it does does hallmark sell desk sets i don’t know i need to put your cards on and get this like your fourth year is an

[48:53] appliance in the modern version fourth year appliance and then you walk your way down to a desk set like here’s your business card

[49:01] holder here’s your pencil holder i love what’s here on that right year 16 diamonds or something what’s the model version

[49:09] it’s diamond for both they oh oh oh get this on they’ve updated it so that your 30th anniversary is also a diamond in the modern art

[49:19] nice try i’m going to oh hold on hold on hold on on the 10th anniversary 10th anniversary of the modern version

[49:26] guess what it is diamond diamond jewelry okay who wrote this peppered a bunch of diamonds into it

[49:35] they’ve literally just peppered like diamonds and appliances into the old list yeah why not desk sets desk sets

[49:42] leather there was like furs at one point i saw i’m like that’s not textile furs is that modern because that doesn’t

[49:51] sound that’s modern yeah here’s a pelt in the 14th year in the classic it’s animals with an asterisk

[50:01] oh but here’s the uh historically the traditional 14th anniversary gift was ivory but endangered elephant

[50:08] populations make that an unethical choice so give them the baby the baby dog they’ve always wanted

[50:17] animals wow yeah you should just list and report back yeah so this will be my year

[50:23] this will be my yearly but uh anyways for ninth i was supposed to go with willow or pottery willow or potter like

[50:34] yeah okay like like i guess like a wreath made out of like willow tree you should just get rid of the movie i guess i can give her

[50:42] just give a picture of my gavin’s baby be perfect there you go that’s even better he’s got a friend pitcher modern version’s

[50:49] leather so wallet or purse i guess next year i’m screwed it’s either tin or aluminum or diamond

[50:59] i think i’m gonna go with the old version this can of coke i got your tin can full of diamonds sorry

[51:11] about mother’s day every year let’s never speak of this list let’s just yeah

[51:18] it’s gone no way geez i guess just as a random segue i’ll mention that uh

[51:25] i’ve fallen a bunch of ranks in street fighter where notably i was three hundred and nine hundred

[51:33] thousandth now i’m nothing because i’ve lost all my points so i’m not ranked anymore oh look at you yeah it just it was a

[51:42] it was a catastrophe every time you lose so every time you win you gain points like two people go up and you either take the

[51:49] points or you lose the points um and i just lost a bunch and i lost all my points but it’s uh

[51:57] yeah still man i don’t know what to say i’m still enjoying it and i’m practicing like the combos and everything there’s a certain

[52:04] thrill to it as far as learning it although i tend to it seems that i’ll learn a new skill and then forget the previous two skills so i’ll go into a

[52:12] match that’s the dead memory pushes the other one out oh yeah it’s not this is going to be a slow

[52:20] learning process you have like you have room in your skull for like three combos i mean i wish i had three combos and i’d be set

[52:28] there was one combo and i was like okay in this match i’ve already lost i’m going to lose this once i’m going to try to land the combo once did not land the

[52:35] combo once not a single time this guy had my number it was yeah bad

[52:42] but enjoying i don’t know what to say about it it’s bizarre it’s just uh it’s interesting training and just doing

[52:49] a couple fights it’s quickening out so still kind of great from a dab perspective the the quest continues

[52:57] keep it going you’re gonna put that under the the video you gotta be ranked 300 000 and then the next video unranked so i’ve heard that they’ve sold

[53:04] 1.9 million and if i was given the 300 yeah so if i was in the 300 000 if i continue well like if i get to 200

[53:14] thousands then all of a sudden like those numbers are starting to that percentile start to look pretty good

[53:21] whatever makes it feel better were you gaming on mother’s day you were where you’re like i gotta do it i wish baby i gotta train

[53:29] what is my life’s meaning if it’s not something in street fighter look this baby’s great but is he gonna respect a man that’s not above 200 000

[53:38] street fighter i don’t think so like i’m already in the doghouse how much more harm can i do that could get worse

[53:46] oh so the geez we should have discussed beforehand but uh trying to think do we have any dad challenges for this week

[53:54] not that challenge yeah nothing comes mother’s day let’s just took it out of me and i’m done with that

[54:03] yeah yeah achievement unlocked nap time enabled since they play the uh i’d like to still

[54:12] get i’d like to see how the total array of dads feel about overwatch but gavin i think only the beta the free beta stops

[54:21] tonight i think so we extended to the 10th is tonight that is today the ninth

[54:27] nine i can’t remember that so i guess it’s one more day i don’t know yeah so much less just watch a video

[54:37] yeah yeah that looks okay man if you haven’t have you guys have both of you watched the um prequel videos there’s two out now

[54:45] one with uh tracer the british girl in yellow and then there’s one with the monkey no yeah no i haven’t had a chance to

[54:51] check the move yet dude i’ve seen bits of but not the whole thing do that as knowing what i do knowing what i know about you two

[55:00] i would challenge you both and to watch them watch the two episodes so the overwatch um movies hey just appreciate the fidelity

[55:09] like it’s pixar level stuff it gets unbelievable and then watch that not and come back and tell me you’re not a little bit intrigued about how this game

[55:17] would game and game world would unfold oh i am already intrigued by it it’s just a matter of like i know that that type of game like a multiplayer only

[55:27] game it’s just it’s not conducive to my lifestyle right now but like i mean actually that’s the thing too is my wife was super excited to play it like she

[55:35] was like oh i want to play it like because we like playing blizzard games together we played diablo through like twice

[55:41] um but uh there’s no local support right so it’s like it was something that her and i when we first saw coming out and seeing it it’s like oh this this

[55:50] universe looks really cool this style is really fun this looks really interesting and like she was intrigued on playing it i wanted to play it too and we’re like

[55:58] okay this is something we can play together and a lot of the arrows are pointing to no so it’s kind of that’s one of the things that kind of

[56:05] took some of the wind into my sails to really get into it because it’s like i don’t want to get into it and then

[56:11] enjoy it without her and then have her be like but i want to enjoy that with you too like it kind of would feel weird

[56:18] um it would kind of be kind of a jerk move um

[56:23] so yeah i think that that’s the other factor too is it’s like i wish that they had something that was a little bit more inclusive to people who didn’t

[56:30] have just like an online account and stuff like that i was like i just want to play with somebody in the room with me but it’s like no it’s multiplayer

[56:37] only it’s arena style only it’s combat only there’s no other sort of components to it which i get like i totally get from a game design perspective but like

[56:46] um yeah i guess that was one of the things where it’s like i’m sold on it but the style of game it is

[56:53] you know that sort of team fortress style arena combat competition it’s just not really conducive to my

[57:01] gaming style at the moment by the time it is it will probably be like there’ll be a new one or there’ll be a new thing we’ll be playing like

[57:09] call of duty rocket league in space or something probably doing a quick

[57:19] google search for split screen it seems like no yeah there’s no way no with that well not on consoles at least with the frame

[57:27] rate yeah like it looks clean and it plays clean but there’s no way you can add a second

[57:34] and there’s a no no yeah which is too bad yeah it’s a little bit of challenge tonight

[57:49] with gavin’s stretch i think that signals the end of another podcast thanks every once again for thanks again everyone for listening we do the show

[58:24] three-year-old i think after multiple episodes i would have had that uh closing down but uh i should probably really stumbled through

[58:33] that one i should likely write it down i’m still waiting for jeff to sneak in a third kid it’s slippery

[58:41] combo breaker i’m jeff i had a vasectomy i have a five-year-old even better is like my name is jeff i

[58:49] have a five-year-old but jeff i thought that you’d five yeah yeah yes

[58:56] i’m waiting for one of you to sneak in one yeah yeah yeah it’s just like again jeff loses a three-year-old and gavin somehow

[59:03] picks up a three-year-old yeah yeah i have a nine month old and a three-year-old good luck kevin man it looks a lot like

[59:10] jeff bizarre why is he in the picture frame now it’s weird photoshopped in

[59:24] something doesn’t feel right yeah all right all right thanks so much we’ll see you next week
