[2:30] porous and the kids are asleep welcome to new dad gaming a show about fatherhood gaming and new fathers figuring out their gaming lives my name

[2:40] is Trevor and I have a one-month-old my name is Gavin hold on ever what Jesus I have a one-year-old Wow unit time bunker i interrogated his story doesn’t match

[2:54] wow I have a one-year-old Jeffers been replaced by a replicant sip oh good Trevor well done one year old oh my name is Gavin I have a 10 month old and I’m

[3:13] GF I mean Jeff I have a five-year-old in a three year old wow that’s the good start welcome to show everybody I’ll apologize on my behalf for my audio and

[3:25] video I am currently traveling for work and managed to forget a couple necessary cords therefore this is the mobile version of myself and I’ve found the

[3:36] best possible location in the place I could there is very scenic in the beautiful ottawa in case you can’t tell Oh literally a room with a chair to be

[3:48] and some very severe lighting yeah I like this big elaborate story to let people know you’re not holding cell yes you had to do this dream you had one

[4:00] phone call yes canada question officer can it be a video call all right we’re in business the noise gentlemen how how was your week in fatherhood and game um

[4:18] mine pretty good I in Doom digging it and haven’t really done much with the steam sales or the PlayStation also has a mid-year sale going on too as far as

[4:32] fatherhood pretty good we went to the park today that was a lot of fun um no real big news bits just really fun week or zipping around the

[4:45] apartment and having fun we got a baby gate now which is really handy and it’s one with pressure fit ones that you pop off and remove so sort of like we have

[4:55] varying ways of corralling her and how much freedom she gets did a bit of baby-proofing today just upgrading our proof pneus and realizing that some of

[5:08] the walls in her apartment are made of like saltines and rocks so that’s I was good yeah anchoring of that stuff is kind of weird so I’ve had some head

[5:19] scratching to do but luckily the furniture that needs to get anchored is like he’s still a good like two feet of growth before she could really do

[5:30] anything that dangerous so but all the big nasty stuff mostly anchor and if not it’s not even hang it was remotely close to where she plays but Wow a baby

[5:41] proofing especially in a place like I’m used to drywall and studs but like with old apartment buildings and that some of the building materials that are like I

[5:49] hit one wall rules like like half inch of plaster a half inch of styrofoam like polystyrene and then just smile and it’s just like what are you like how it’s

[6:00] like not even like sheetrock where I can use an anchor and even if it was there’s only like tiny bit of clearance so it’s like the anchor won’t have room and it’s

[6:09] just like you’re killing me so that’s a good big dad snagging of the week is just banging my head against walls that are made of materials that are just make

[6:20] no sense to me but cannot sustain headbang whatsoever so maybe I should just yeah if I just put the bolt in the wall that way that oughta do it all I

[6:32] picture is you like just inserting the anchor and it goes into your neighbor’s place is just yeah alright if it pushes the anchor out

[6:41] on their end okay that’s all the pictures picture frames call them all together TV just plummets to the ground sorry is that the rotate so one week you

[6:52] get nice things hung up next week they get nice things hung up yeah coordinator on family visits there’s a shared pegs you gotta survive Jeff yourself how was

[7:04] your weekend fatherhood game fatherhood was pretty interesting we went to a Canada Day celebration at a buddies house he had a big field party and it’s

[7:15] the first time we’ve done that with kids so parties have changed that way back I see as in is that an old man saying is it that’s amazing right now yeah back in

[7:31] my day when we back in my days I get ripped no it’s it was slightly different so my buddy had set up fireworks and stuff for the kids to enjoy but you know

[7:43] that would that kind of took place late at night and around 10 so having the kids run around all day out in the field you could pick up the dads that would

[7:53] get stuck with all the free-range kids so I was one of them I had my turn so if you’re out by the swing set just by chance talking to somebody all the kids

[8:06] will you know kind of congregate around the swing set and then all of a sudden you’re responsible for eight to ten kids as their parents are like oh no it’s

[8:15] just you wait a minute i need to go refill a drink or I’ll get a burger want anything I’ll bring it back and then they disappear so then you know you’re

[8:24] standing there for a while for your 30-minute hour shift and then you’re like I don’t know somehow you have to pass the buck it’s like a hot potato

[8:32] button so yeah two potatoes yeah is you wanna braid except um well well there’s a yeah like the kids seem to multiply like they come out of the woodwork like

[8:42] yeah this is more that appear just like imparting woods yeah it’s just the conversation the parents are having okay Susie you see that sad looking man

[8:52] beside the swing good luck is where you can go play so actually that’s not advice you want to give a kid yeah right yes sir come sit whoops Oh sir I

[9:05] wouldn’t suggest that to your kid but feel party ya ain’t no offer a field party so yeah back in the car yeah yeah fun kid okay cool everything I told you

[9:16] on that field I need you to go and forget you like the men in black like flash just forget it just erase it you know I’m so that was different that was

[9:29] my different experience at a grown-up party i’ll call it i don’t know dad party he hadn’t um and in terms of gaming i bought script to the

[9:41] necrodancer oh nice I was a dancer necrodancer it’s so addicting music rhythm robe like right so yeah rhythm roguelike dungeon crawler and he can’t

[9:55] stop playing it’s on sale on steam of course it just got released for iOS to but unseen it’s a lot cheaper well three bucks cheaper it’s like four dollars and

[10:05] you tapped to the beat right so there’s a soundtrack and you have to tap to the beat and that’s how your character kind of moves and yes if you keep the rhythm

[10:12] like you have the strength and if you you can hit the enemies as they they move so they move in a different rhythm towards you and each enemy has their own

[10:22] pattern so you have to kind of like almost danced around them to get them and if you miss it be you can’t act so you can’t you know swipe your sword or

[10:31] pull the magic spell or whatever so it gets really like you’re really into it so I’ve played the first well i would say few levels but it’s it’s randomly

[10:41] generated but i keep dying you go back you kind of power up and go back in but once you get out of it you find yourself doing the same rhythm to like websites

[10:49] you’re just like scroll scroll Scroll scroll he’s just sleeping is like his foot is like just like yeah like and it’s totally like vibrant it’s like just

[11:02] all the lights go off and if you’re in like a in a good rhythm there’s like a disco floor that appears on the dungeon floor so it just gets you

[11:10] into it and my kids have walked by when I’ve been playing it and they’re all into it too because it’s just pixel art so there’s nothing in there can harm

[11:18] them maybe um but they’re all into it too so it’s and it’s something that they could play and have fun with so it’s just it’s a fun game um I haven’t

[11:27] checked that one I’ve been 1 i’ve been i ended up for a while but i actually haven’t really chatted too much to anybody who’s like have people i’ve

[11:34] talked to most of the guessin but I’ve never had anybody described it with such enthusiasm so I think he sold online it’s getting attention thanks oh [ __ ]

[11:43] with my kid angle does something something like a kid could have a blast at and a nice little introduction to rogue legs as well yeah yeah yeah yeah

[11:50] it’s neat I discovered that my daughter likes like like Latino music and like salsa music inside oh yeah yeah she loves it I don’t know like I was washing

[12:01] go and it came on and then she was just like what am I what about me yeah we have looked are these feelings in my heart yes it must move like she’ll start

[12:14] like clapping and stuff and it’s just like wow she likes it alright fair enough so I’ll put that on sometimes we have like on with our TV there’s like

[12:24] the radio stations on the TV and there’s a station on there it’s just like nothing but that she is totally dig so likely i discovered that yesterday and

[12:32] Lindsay comes home from work and it’s just like yeah it’s just she’s a little baby’s just boogie into salsa music and she’s like okay all right that’s a

[12:45] little after noon so the deaths of the daughter of an Irishman has terrible latin heat from what we’re under stick yeah she could you and if she discovers

[12:55] any rhythm she did not get it for me it’s why he mentioned that though cuz mice my son went to a home daycare for about like a year and a half or two

[13:04] years ago and she played a lot of Latin dance stuff so I know like there’s this super popular one that we played all the time and you played in the car with the

[13:15] windows down hilarious looks look for lack of a better word the whitest family just ignorant yeah I thought your injury was for a wild orgy

[13:25] yeah yeah no it’s fun to like when because there’s things that we sort of like we hear all the time or we experience like therapy things that we

[13:38] see or hear or whatnot and like because we’re just you know full firts that have been just bombarded with sensory overload for decades seeing that stuff

[13:50] again for the first time through them is all really kind of cool because it’s like they’re like well this is really neat you’re like yeah you know what it

[13:58] is like why did I why did I not pay more attention to this before so it’s I think that’s one of the things I’ve been really digging about fatherhood it’s

[14:06] just that like forced review of things that I’ve long since sort of like you know made my knee-jerk reaction and moved on it’s kind of like kids really

[14:20] make you look at it again you’re like yeah alright cool you know what yeah why not we’ll play this all day with it so yes fun pop is amazing a like Jeff did

[14:32] your kids get into any other rhythm games I know they like there was during the peripheral tradesmen of course there’s rock band but I mean there was

[14:40] doggie calm bongos there was a one with the shakers with whatever cat they brought back from the 90s Sega Saturn like you know they’re gonna have think

[14:51] there’s like shakers and rumba rumba cat but I think they missed out on a lot of that stuff it just wasn’t the donkey kong stuff I I would have gotten them if

[15:03] I don’t think they were of an age that they could really get into it but they’ve played a bunch of stuff on Wii and at friends houses like the dance

[15:13] revolution stuff just having fun there’s no way that they can complete some of those insane moves but we have fun with that stuff and like honestly to have

[15:23] like music in a game is totally how to introduce kids into into video game just with the bright visuals the dance it’s something they know and they can get

[15:35] into and then they think it’s fun and then they want to do other things and that’s how they kind of take off an explorer but Dark Soul sorry yeah and

[15:43] like you meet the cold dead world after high school college you’re like oh my god now it’s dark schools yeah really it’s just you know get them used to it

[15:55] yeah I’m Italian now oh yeah yeah so myself there so I fold through with the challenge on age of empires 2 oh yeah yes just how do you go like it slowly

[16:12] one be over when I started it it was just kind of a weird s old map these tiny guys which are really hard to tell apart it’s obvious guys I mean this

[16:22] guy’s a soldier this guy’s a yeah peasant I’m like sure okay ten-year-old game yeah and then I though like I you know but just I was like all right click

[16:51] and this is just like still like relatively I even got into some of the advanced stuff I identified it a bit stressful I mean I manage people in my

[17:01] day job and the thought of I got to manage a whole nother set of people in my recreation is a bit no nothing cuz I mean what was great as I found the

[17:11] button that said find the next like Idol peon or idle competant yeah that’s an amazing button cuz i got like no clue at some point you have liked like 50 the

[17:22] guys you’re just like x guy like are all of you working right now look huh are all of you busy like are you you need that button in your job yeah as I say no

[17:44] no work tabs right now oh but at the yeah I can see this I think in many ways i’d love to do a couple version rounds of it where there’s no enemies no I was

[18:36] fun to go a couple rounds with no enemy so you could just build if I get through the different ages like there’s a certain rewarding thing to it and then

[18:45] you know as things progress like then start to take on people and actually battle but that’s good you could see how concepts like which is basically when I

[18:56] bent when I said it like that I even had that thought i’m like well that’s like the sims like that’s that’s how the sims were created basically where it’s like

[19:04] give me some of that management stuff would just make it like he’ll just trying to survive life yes huh it’s like can can I just like fart around without

[19:13] the tornados and earthquakes yeah I’m sure that’s a mod for the sims just the same yeah probably yeah but the melon of it and you could tell the other thing

[19:25] too is I’d like i had heard i don’t know if it’s at this game and maybe you guys have heard that too where there was one guy who has been playing this for has

[19:33] been had a game going for like 20 years he’s had the same game going i might be the original age of empires really he did he just never moved on like you

[19:43] started the game and it was you know open i did never had yeah and he’s just played it for like 10 20 years straight same when I’m 12 just keep yeah and it’s

[19:55] funny when you could that I was reminded of that situation is when I started the game as a plethora of options tons of options who do you want

[20:04] to be 50 types of humans like 60 types of maps and resources by locations I mean if this was your jam and you told me you’ve never played another game like

[20:15] this is just oh it sounded good like I could believe you like the amount of like crazy scenarios and depth you can get others one old rickety game it’s

[20:25] pretty astounding like you literally could not have another game and probably okay with this one see that’s when they develop games and cared I’m just kidding

[20:33] thank you like the game dog gave you a lot of it at once right not all of it was DLC or buy this buy that like it’s like this ding game could last you a few

[20:44] years if you wanted it to like my taste would change after a while but some point you want to shoot something but yeah yeah I’m pretty sure even this one

[26:58] room it’s slowly think we revealed to be a drunk tank cuz i cant big rig brewing named out to the auto senator this nickname is big rig that’s also

[29:07] watch I don’t think I really picked up that much from the sale I guess I the last week I think too like I was looking at the sale and like there’s some good

[29:16] stuff on there but I still get a few things in my cue to work on and right now I’ve just really been enjoying what games i have on the go and i’m starting

[29:25] a fair-sized project in the next week or so um and that’s going to get busy so it’s like I kind of feel weird if I’m like I stock up on a bunch of stuff like

[29:37] a week before I really commit to a new project that it’s just gonna be like just too much dictation um so yeah there was a few things but nothing really like

[29:50] having me scrambling for my wallet I think I might pick up the remake of grim fandango no yeah yeah because it’s on sale right now with what the ps4 just

[30:04] cuz I remember really enjoying that game years back so I’m really hoping that eventually they do a full throttle re-release because that is still by far

[30:16] one of my favorite point and clicks of all time but grandpa angle is pretty awesome too might pick that up and yeah I’m taking my cat fire watch but it’s

[30:27] more normal so trying to decide if I want to get it for the ps4 slepe like linds and i can sit together and play as you get through the grim fandango like

[30:36] keep us updated because I not sure if you were on but even when the shows you were gone but I had picked it up at I was trying to play it mm-hmm I just

[30:45] couldn’t just give me yeah I think I remember you mentioning something like that you just could yeah it might just be my limitation on it but

[30:52] I just there was a couple puzzles that felt like as being really a sanai about the choices like because being so clever and just wacky out there to left field i

[31:03] couldn’t figure it out so it literally was take tall of things and click them against all the things and eventually going to solve it as opposed to any real

[31:12] cleverness to it yeah i think but that was just mine i’d be really curious to hear your take if you do end up spinning through it oh yeah no I’ll keep you

[31:35] that I’ve been enjoying that is not really game related but it is sort of like just relax chill time for myself related I started watching that AMC

[31:45] series preacher I’m gonna go to episode or two in and it’s uh I was a fan of the comic and I’m also began assassin and he’s kind of helming it so it’s got this

[32:01] really quirky sense of humor to it that the comic book had like it’s just a very very dark city anywhere and it’s translating well and it’s definitely

[32:10] found a good home on AMC because they have high tolerance for some of the you know depravity that happens in the book there’s some low bar stuff but most part

[32:22] though it’s been enjoyable so yeah it’s like I’ve been offsetting all the cute toys and stuff like violent video games and TV shows I just said AMC’s thankful

[32:34] for anything beyond Walking Dead to one other time slots especially since Lee you know they lost Breaking Bad they had mad men like both meals concluded better

[32:48] call stalls really good I was a fan of breaking bad and I started watching better call Saul and that one’s got a I like it a lot actually it’s got a quite

[32:57] a bit of humanity to it um but yeah it’s like they just like having anything added to the sure they don’t think anything will ever

[33:06] come close to getting to Walking Dead fan fame but it’s still you know it’s good to see them open to like hey we’re here rehearsal this revenue we’ve

[33:16] accumulated from walking dead properties so I’m happy that it’s not just all walking dead spin offs it was just funny when they would always promote the next

[33:28] show that they want to get in so it was always like low winter Sun at the end of like breaking bad when it was like just finishing it’s like I’m not gonna watch

[33:35] low winter Sun I’m not gonna and it just ends up being cancelled because like I don’t don’t care yeah because you guys ever play the walking dead a telltale

[33:47] walking game lock the tell-tale walking dead series yeah uh yes Trevor I tried it for a little bit I didn’t finish season one I really enjoyed it but it

[33:59] was one of those steam games that just sort of got left by the wayside but I is one that I want to get back into one mechanic and I really liked was that

[34:07] timing bar where it’s like you had to choose your response within a certain amount of time during conversations so it’s like you couldn’t just mass effect

[34:19] should let it sit for 20 minutes while you him and hob at your choice like there was sort of an anticipation from the person you’re conversing with to

[34:27] give them a reply and I thought that sort of added that stress to a conversation like I got to make up my mind uh yeah sure let’s do it another

[34:37] game that did that too was one called alpha protocol it was like a RPG spy game and I enjoyed that one way more than I should have you know like all the

[34:50] reviews on it were fairly negative but alpha protocol was really good but yeah that walking dead telltale Game that was kind of the paradigm shift for telltale

[34:58] games too because after they did that there was like wolf amount less um and like now they’re moving that man details of the Bordeaux ends yeah they

[35:10] not yeah apparently that one was really solid to like they’re doing a good job with these narrative adventures um they did a minecraft 12 I believe they gave a

[35:21] Thrones to or no um they did I get it I think they did yeah they did summer hits summer mrs. but it was a walking dead one that was the big sort of shift to

[35:32] getting an audience excited for the sort of a narrative choose your own adventure style of storytelling and gameplay and video game so yeah it’s exciting to see

[35:46] like I’m happy to see it like I don’t play enough of them I should play more of them but I ought to them to follow ups for you actually then based on that

[35:54] so you mentioned the Batman one do you think Batman will be suited for this like will that work well I think if they play like the detective angle more arm

[36:05] like rather than crime-fighting having more of a crime solving and it looks like they’re also going to be spending more time as Bruce Wayne so that will

[36:16] give the player to explore more of that more from that angle usually in a batman game you’re always been the cowl punching people in the face and that’s

[36:25] been explored really well but maybe if they get more into the intellectual side of batman that could be really interesting you know that whole you know

[36:36] world’s greatest detective you know and it treat them more like a sherlock who can you know throw a mighty left as opposed to just a full-on a bruiser so I

[36:47] think that would it has some potential you know and they they do some good jobs with the with the quick time events and having them feel tense and a lot of

[36:58] adrenaline brought from that so they can do some action stuff it just won’t be like the Arkham games or it’s like more that rhythm timing counter-attack stuff

[37:09] it might be more of one-on-one fights which even the Arkham games resort to QuickTime events so you know um I think it has some potential because

[37:19] it could do well and plus yard style is really pretty like it’s a moving comic it looks really nice what the hell are yourself Jeff what do you think the

[37:27] tell-tale style could suit Batman um again I think as kind of Gavin mentioned if they do play up the more detective angle that could work I also think

[37:37] they’re kind of successful too because it’s really well played on like a mobile or iPad like it’s well suited to that kind of medium as well rather than just

[37:47] a console or PC right you can get snare I think I tried the first episode of the walking dead on iphone when it was I think it was free one month or a

[37:57] giveaway and it was kind of neat because you could just play a chapter or an episode and call it quits whenever you kind of wanted to and pick up and play

[38:08] so I think it will do well I do think that I don’t know it seems like they’re just they pick up a new like a new license and they kind of run with it

[38:18] which is getting bad i hope they kind of innovate their style a bit too because it just seemed be nice to see them develop their own IP yeah I agree that

[38:26] would be kind of it would be fun to see there because the the writers they have the artists they have the programmers they have you know especially even just

[38:35] there the creative team they do get a lot of mileage out of these existing properties yeah I’d like to really see what would happen if some of those are

[38:43] at Leeds or just kind of given carb launch and just being like it yet do it yeah spread your name to bed right so like we’ve developed enough capital from

[38:51] all of our license stuff like we can invest into our own thing um and hopefully they will like I think that would be cool like I do like license

[39:02] things but right now like movies and TV and video games everything’s connected to a license or a sequel or remake or reboot and it’s just like some sometimes

[39:14] you get really hungry for something new you know like something that’s not connected any of that something that’s just an original brand new sort of

[39:24] exploration of characters last night actually my wife and I watched that movie American all and it was thoroughly entertaining um

[39:34] because it was just something we neither of us it really seen before it had elements of stuff we’d seen before which made it kind of fun but it was a new

[39:42] kind of take on on that and and yeah it was it was a good time but because it was something new those new characters a new situation a new story new plot yeah

[39:55] so I think that’s the thing i think telltale they do a great job keeping faithful to properties but you know i think they’ve they’ve cut their teeth

[40:06] enough to try making their own stuff now molest them last question to you both on that actually would be that style of game is it suit a new father gaming like

[40:19] is it there’s enough stop and start points or would you be able to get enough into that game get enough out of that game in between you know 20 minute

[40:28] nap sessions I think so especially because from what I played with the first episode of walking dead is because everything is very like time keeps

[40:39] ticking whether you make a choice or not um it kind of promotes a bit of haste to your decision-making like even though your choices have gravity there’s that

[40:55] sense of like well you got to make up your mind and also the fact too that it’s a very mobile friendly game or like their style like it is something worth

[41:07] let’s say you’re taking a subway ride into work you can you know those almost at the level design is designed for an actor to take place within a certain

[41:18] span of time because you only have so long to make your choices that with the exception of dying and having to replay it actually forces you to get so much

[41:28] time done thin so much time just how they’re kind of like all right make it remind let’s go let’s go let’s go make your decisions but be careful so yeah I

[41:39] would say that it would be well suited for anything like actually you just asking that question has me really anxious to maybe boot up what

[41:51] telltale stuff I’ve yet to explore that I literally have in my hard drive because I when I first experienced it I I was pulled away from it by games that

[42:04] are no longer really conducive to a dad lifestyle and maybe now that I’m a parent games like this might better fill in those little gaps of time that I have

[42:18] you know nothing that she’s hearing you describe it like that to kind of makes me wonder about diving in cuz i have the walking dead series yeah in my Steam

[42:28] library just never did try it but she’s damn it if it doesn’t sound like something that might just fit the bill nicely yeah the only only knock i would

[42:38] give against them is just the episodic nature of it because sometimes i’ll i’ll wait it out until they had like a compendium of like all of the all the

[42:48] episodes string together so i know that it’s like I started I know it’s going to end or seems I started it’s going to end and then it’s going to be continued in a

[42:56] year or whatever there that’s the same reason why a lot of people wait for box sets of TV shows it’s like yeah I’ll just wait till it’s done and then I’ll

[43:05] just binge you know and I think that’s a lot of times how people feel about episodic content because I think a lot of people have grown somewhat they tread

[43:20] lightly with it they’re like okay I’m not gonna invest too much because things get canned yeah half-life started it really yeah let’s be honest I mean we’re

[43:33] still waiting but never gonna Sesame yeah it’s uh yeah so I think we see you know TV shows all the time like every season come fall there’s like this big

[43:45] wave of new fun stuff and then by December the hatchet men come in but percent of its gone so do you invest too much into something just have your

[44:02] heart broken where do you wait until like the krikorian edition is released and you you have a full story beginning middle and end and it’s like yeah i

[44:10] agree with you Jeff like I think with like that’s I think that’s the other reason why I’ve avoided the new hitman game I love the hip and series and this

[44:18] one seems to be keeping true to form in the sense of exploration and a variety of different approaches but the episodic content kind of has me hesitant to to

[44:30] invest right yet because it’s like yeah I’m gonna just I’m going to hang back I wish you all the best and then let me know when you release the collectors

[44:38] edition and I’ll be right on it yeah yeah yeah cheers and hopes from afar yeah yeah you succeed let’s see I’ll see you at the finish line you just hope you

[45:12] yeah so it’s like it’s like you don’t have enough boards for the hull it’s like I will find would get it get it done and that idea that they launch

[45:23] games now before their seaworthy that has me kind of like like I don’t know like I could be wrong prove me wrong yep but yeah yeah yeah yeah it’s a long time

[45:38] I mean just because it’s bigger one [ __ ] projects you get it more advanced like I think one game actually I had touched during the week which was

[45:45] the broken age which had been the big Kickstarter from double fine and at some point they decided to release part 1 they decide to break it up over these

[45:57] part 1 it’s just like oh is that are you gonna give us part 2 like is they are you gonna finish it is this is this a hint that this kind of

[46:08] issue who’s in it but they game to running that did fine but yeah it’s the episodic thing is a little troubling them especially especially an especially

[46:18] with a telltale one where it’s so deep and narrative driven this incredible story and then if it locked off it didn’t finish it’s just like yeah yeah

[46:27] what am I supposed to do now it’s like a mass effect like stopped it to you know it’s just like this letter photo or just perfect example of half legs like an

[46:39] alert on I finished it like 10 years ago yeah good episode 3 let’s do this maybe maybe in our last we can’t now but that’s the problem like we can discuss

[46:51] that another time but they can’t they can’t really say no way me episode about half of it we don’t want to uncover just a pain there let’s see you to see
