Episode 40: All Aboard the Hype (or) Hate Train | New Dad Gaming

[0:01] i’m gonna state for the record again that um the rocket roll one from last week was totally off the cuff i even forgot the

[0:10] guy’s name sam roberts yeah that sam roberts one was off the top of my head great moments in this podcast history

[0:20] just pulled it out of the air we’re having a year-end show this means a year in show you’re going to go back and clip all the good ones

[0:27] you’re going to make a montage set to some sort of techno music or something no i just said it to sam roberts

[0:36] even better to be clear if sam roberts is listening i’d love to have him on the show fan of the music just the beer not to my taste

[0:56] yeah the kids are asleep the adult beverages are poured it is time for new dad gaming a show about fatherhood gaming and new

[1:05] fathers figuring out their gaming lives my name is trevor and i have a one-year-old my name is gavin and i have a

[1:12] one-year-old and i’m jeff i have a three-year-old and my six-year-old’s away this week like as a trial run of a trial run

[1:23] what would happen if we leave college yeah it kind of is it’s great grocery bill was a lot lower we got to go to dinner

[1:33] i don’t know we’re living a life it’s great so to elaborate why he’s missing currently

[1:42] well he’s yeah he’s missing he’s at grandma camp so he’s at grandma’s for a week that was um

[1:51] part of the deal for summer he’s been in camps like every week from soccer camp to taekwondo camp to lego camp to all these other things so

[2:00] he spent a week with uh my wife’s mom and then now it’s my mom so he’s up there it’s great having one kid i’ll tell you wow it is a change

[2:11] personalities change like just between my wife and i we’re like we’re happier more time

[2:21] we lost like 10 pounds even though like even my three-year-old he’s just a different different person because now you can talk my six-year-old

[2:30] talks a lot and people you know kind of roll their eyes like yeah he talks whatever but then he meet they actually meet him and he he talks

[2:39] he that’s all he does so it’s it’s quiet seven o’clock he’s not a subscriber to the show is he he will be in future years right when he

[2:49] sees the trevor montage he’ll clue in he’s gonna watch this show and it’s like hey hey hey

[2:57] you made fun of me 18 years ago he told me i was aptly sometimes yeah no it’s it’s good to have a break a little break

[3:08] it’s the less stress of two i don’t know but it’s kind of like really really selling trevor and i on the second one this one’s totally good there’s two of

[3:21] you and two of them nothing can go wrong at all yeah you can totally get rid of them sometimes with grandma grandma camp so

[3:32] what’s like so what’s driving the camp on rush is it you guys wanting them to experience a lot like is he asking for all these

[3:40] camps or like what’s why well we have nowhere else to put them right so you have to put him in something you got to do something like he’s in

[3:48] school and we’re out of the days of one can stay home so you put him in camp and i didn’t want to put him in

[3:54] so you go through this process in june you say what camp what do you want to do this summer and the kid doesn’t know so you suggest things

[4:03] but if he doesn’t like that camp on week one and you sign him up for the six weeks of summer good luck like at least with every week where it changes

[4:12] it might be a good week might be a bad week but there’s only five days of it so you just move on you just bite the bullet

[4:18] because there’s been some camps where he’s gone kicking and screaming saying i don’t want to go it’s boring whatever but he’s he’ll tell you the next year i

[4:25] love that camp that was my number one camp i want to go back kids don’t know what they want they’re kids

[4:33] it’s stupid they’ll work for ice cream that’s all they’ll do ice cream on fridays and just be good

[4:41] so yeah remember i don’t get a variety right like i remember as a kid i would stay home with my mom and chill with my friends on the street and then we just i

[4:48] don’t know run down the forest yeah that doesn’t happen anymore yeah we had like camp

[4:55] crabapple tag yeah yeah super soaker tag go out there yeah

[5:02] you just came home for dinner shoved down the hill on a wagon okay sugar number of the year

[5:10] we had a cottage growing up in our water was rocky so the the make work activity my parents would have is that if you they would send you

[5:18] to the bay and they gave the guys like oh we’re gonna try to get rid of the rocks and make it sandy so if you get if you throw 100 rocks out of the water

[5:26] onto the side you earn a dollar all right so yeah so of course i think you know and the

[5:35] best part is then you take that dollar that shiny dollar and you would bike for an hour to the closest grocery store to buy candy so like it’s just it’s

[5:45] perfect for the kid because your kids in the water just like hauling rocks for an hour for a dollar yeah and then they’re gone biking

[5:53] by the time they get back from that like sure we got some sugar high but we’re exhausted yeah yeah wow

[6:00] and there’s there is no sand in that lake by the way like it is just it is infinite rock wow

[6:08] your summers was camp chain gang they all whistled when they did it yeah without the songs i don’t think there’s any coordination

[6:20] wow i think i think the chain gangs like accomplish something too like don’t they like

[6:25] don’t they make like usable fields or like build an actual railway like we did nothing like nothing an activity of nothing for dollars an

[6:34] erosion would just bring back more rocks the next year oh it’s just like the lake freezes over and just pushes oh they’re infinite more rocks you are not going to

[6:42] get rid of brooks though oh the yeah the so curious like so we had um of course last week we had our

[6:51] groundbreaking exclusive interview with gavin game designer with uh his first release so gavin now it’s been an extra week of your game

[7:00] being out of the game you worked on perhaps might be the better way to say it and yeah

[7:05] mine now mine i made this so what’s the uh yeah what’s the experience well how’s it been again as a reviews and kind of the

[7:16] dust settles on it being live good good we’re um seeing more and more reviews coming out uh more and more people really enjoying it

[7:24] uh just not not just twitter buzz either but like actual published reviews and that we’re seeing people starting to get the overall point of the game um

[7:35] i think some of the other reviews that we had earlier on there was a few people who might have been looking at the game

[7:42] as a different type of game than it actually was um and then trying to maybe assess it on those merits as opposed to the actual

[7:51] uh goal of the game and what it was setting up to do and people are starting to get that now which is uh which is feeling

[7:58] really great um you know especially for ben being able to sort of see that because he put so much work into the

[8:06] writing um to see people starting to appreciate the narrative component of it as opposed to just trying to whiz through it to get

[8:14] to the next puzzle which is you know a very common um way of playing games nowadays and now it’s like no no this game is

[8:23] about stopping and smelling the roses is not about vaulting over them to get to the next objective so

[8:31] we’re starting to see a little bit more of people getting to that and i’m hoping that the people who might have played it and

[8:38] played it with a different sort of sense of objective in mind um but maybe you want to give it another shot um after reading some of these

[8:46] other reviews uh not as much to amend like their score for her own benefit but more so just for their own enjoyment it’s like hey like try it again but

[8:55] think of it this way you know and and uh see if you like it then and you know you know how about instead of treating the shining as a rom-com maybe

[9:05] watch it again but think of it as like a suspenseful horror movie and maybe it will resonate more with you um

[9:13] so yeah we’re starting to see a little bit of that and it’s really exciting and i’m i’m still getting this is one of the first times that i’ve

[9:20] had a substantial amount of my work get reviewed in the public forum so that’s kind of been fun

[9:26] uh to see um you know definitely the majority of my uh my career um has been a lot of just like work that gets

[9:36] out there but it’s it’s more for educational publications or uh marketing materials or storyboarding like you know i’ll see the

[9:44] commercialized storyboard on tv and then but i’m like nobody knows because you never even see the boards you just see the end result so

[9:52] um and even then like it’s a tv commercial like it’s to advertise a product not the person who made the commercial for the product so

[9:59] um yeah it’s really interesting to see something that’s like a collaborative effort with with a really talented team

[10:08] um being enjoyed by people and that’s kind of like why

[10:13] uh you know these endeavors are usually started in the first place is they you know want to make something that

[10:21] people are going to sit and really uh be able to derive some enjoyment from and hopefully you know have a little moment of

[10:30] fun in their in their in their day and if you know if you can have a hand in that that’s that’s a pretty exciting thing so it’s

[10:38] been it’s been fun there’s been a few really flattering tweets and stuff that i’ve seen that have kind of made me get the warm and fuzzies so

[10:45] that’s always good too but yeah it’s been it’s been fantastic i’ve been uh really really happy with the reception and you know i’m really really

[10:53] proud of the work i got to do and uh really proud to be part of such a project you know the fact that i got

[11:01] brought on it’s fantastic i couldn’t be more uh grateful for that opportunity so so i’m happy that it’s at least you know they’re not like what’s all this pixel

[11:11] art jump who did they hire for that great game that looks like garbage what talent oh so the have you

[11:21] had any urge to hop online and try to defend it or to counter rage any comments that have come up or is it have you kind of been able

[11:30] to detach yourself from it no i’ve been able to kind of just like if i see a point and it’s like i’ll either look at it and you know if it’s a

[11:39] criticism on the on the product i’ll read it and be like okay is this a valid criticism or is this just a personal opinion and if it’s a personal opinion i

[11:48] don’t agree with it then it’s like all right well fair enough like they’re entitled to have that opinion but i’m entitled to just scroll on by

[11:54] you know i don’t really feel like i need to be taking up uh you know a glistening sword of truth and try to uh rectify these things

[12:04] because you know also like like i have an opinion that’s gonna differ from them especially because it’s somewhat biased one

[12:10] um so yeah i don’t really feel any need to defend it because i’m also um like i’m really confident in the work that we did on the game so

[12:20] i find that that’s not like any criticism that i see that i you know there are some that i look at i’m like okay that’s a valid point fair

[12:27] enough i could see how you would feel that way um but any ones like that where i’m like

[12:32] okay yeah that one’s just something where it’s like yeah that maybe no but you know oh well like i still stand by the work so you know

[12:41] feel free to feel that way if you wish that’s cool i’m sorry i didn’t enjoy it but yeah oh

[12:51] not gonna go well and redo it i’ll step in for a bit and i said i’ve i’ve played the game so i’m still playing it i haven’t beaten it yet but i

[12:58] will say one cool part that got me all nostalgic was uh in the game there’s like there’s almost

[13:05] three three dads to do a podcast there’s a uh there’s like a night cycle like they power down to the station and you have to go into the holodeck

[13:16] whatever it’s called so all the power shut off and when you walk your character through the hallways there’s like these sound effects that are so

[13:24] close to like uh super metroid like they remind me of the first um like planet you land on in super metroid and just like

[13:33] weird creatures or something in the background like banging of metal and it just sent me back a bit so it was cool i

[13:39] don’t know it’s just awesome i’ll be sure that uh i’m gonna let the sound designer know that because he’ll get a kick out of hearing that

[13:48] there was actually some really fun fully work that he did too for some of the sound effects or i’m just like oh that’s the sound oh that’s cool

[13:55] so um yeah um ivor did the audio like his stuff was really really solid like not just the music but just the um the

[14:07] atmosphere that he was able to you know i every time that i would be drawing an environment and just kind

[14:14] of thinking in my head like how i wanted to what sort of feelings would i want the player to have while they’re

[14:21] you know exploring it um every time i’d send those uh art assets off to him to have a look at and then like the the sounds that he

[14:30] would pair with it the music that he pair with it i’m just like yeah that’s exactly it like that’s how that’s what i was wanting to evoke and

[14:37] and you’ve you’ve totally just hit the nail on the head and you’re your contribution and your audio is is

[14:47] evoking that even more and and you’ve been to a higher degree um because even if you removed

[14:54] the the art itself you would still have that same reaction just to the sound and to the music so um yeah really really intelligent design

[15:03] on that so i’m that’s something that i’ve i’ve always really appreciated in the game too that pairing worked great and it’s like yeah

[15:10] this is this is good this is fun stuff so i’m really happy that you had that that super metroid nostalgia thing i’ll be sure to mention it to him because

[15:18] actually everybody on the team is going to get kicked out of that i’ll say the um i have it bought and i have it installed it’s ready to go i was

[15:27] showing it to my wife and i was trying to get her like i’m like it’s kind of like a little bit like fire watch it’s really

[15:32] story heavy it’s gonna be cool didn’t uh didn’t seem to initially take the bait but i’m gonna try to i’m still gonna try

[15:38] to try to bring her through it we’ll see how it uh she was

[15:42] she was interested in the graphics it was like you know is this like an old game is this like nice it’s good

[15:48] yeah it’s like that’s kind of like that’s the aesthetic certainly so you’re not wrong no but the uh yes i’m still curious if we

[15:56] can uh play through that together because that’d be the second one after firewatch and that first experiment went so well so i’d be

[16:03] curious to see it i’m still waiting to uh like a wife and i are looking to oh sorry

[16:14] a second oh no we haven’t had one of those in a long time

[16:22] i think mama’s on it always wake-ups man we had a couple because the um he does great he’s a great sleeper now

[16:34] and he’s even been trained so now we just kind of flop him down and say good night and he kind of just

[16:39] he’s in the routine and i was like oh okay i guess i sleep now you’re like yes yes baby do you watch old episodes where you are

[16:46] like tearing your hair out be like she’s not sleeping i don’t know what’s going on gavin would just sit there and he’s like yeah my arms

[16:53] yeah i was like ah ours just goes right down i don’t know what you’re doing wrong trevor i don’t know

[17:00] man i get slightly defensive about it too because the i’ll tell people about it like oh you know he goes to bed at now at about 6 30 seven he wakes up

[17:07] about six like oh you’re so lucky like no no i earned this okay you don’t know what it was like okay

[17:15] you understand what we went through gray hairs yeah i used to be blonde and they used to be

[17:22] down to my back it hurt stone a lot like a lot uh i was thinking that game the other day

[17:30] no desire to go back well you’ve associated with those memories too right so that’s probably working against it sad night

[17:38] there’s some nights where actually i was holding them because you know a lot of times man there’s so many nights when i was

[17:43] just i literally just held him for two hours while he slept there’s also give like my wife a break so she was sleeping i’m kind of with him anyways and if i

[17:51] transfer him good chance nothing’s gonna happen so i just had him in in my arm and the other hand has hearthstone rocking on my phone i’m just

[18:00] trying to play along the worst part like when you’d wake up like halfway through a match i’m like oh no oh boy oh no

[18:08] you go to sleep just like close the eyelids finish game oh yeah but every now and then he’ll do

[18:17] a um super rarely but he’ll wake up at three and just be just

[18:22] bright-eyed ready to go and he won’t go to sleep for like two hours it’s just like this weird two-hour

[18:35] it’s not even like a sympathy vote over here it’s just we’re just chuckling oh i think we’re losing gavin

[18:46] let that ring true for a second for all the dads out there i don’t think they want to hear it though

[18:51] that’s a lot of that’s a lot of screaming that’s why that’s why we escaped back here so jeff in the meantime i can ask did you uh

[18:58] besides alone with you did you dip into any other games uh i’m back on witcher 3 because i have to i have to

[19:06] i have to complete it yeah not yet i haven’t i’m not going to do the expansions there’s expansions i’m

[19:15] not going to bother i need to complete this and be done with my life you need that closure i do so nothing new for me

[19:26] you don’t know how far you are in the game because quests keep popping up it’s like skyrim and fallout it’s just quest upon quests and they begat of the quests

[19:35] you have no idea where the string ends mandatory or like just no could but you’re going to manage a mandatory quest and you’ll overhear like a person

[19:44] talking and all of a sudden there’s a exclamation mark saying hey you can do this optional quest like right now and you’re like

[19:52] okay it’ll only take me five minutes and then no it doesn’t it was on it again the storytelling is great in it so you get

[20:02] sucked in but i need to finish it it’s like a book man it’s like so mean so tempted to i’m so tempted to try

[20:08] that one um shadows of mordor um gavin’s game of mad max there’s a three like decent sized games

[20:16] i’m just looking at them like god that’s so try those especially especially witcher it’s just like that’s good

[20:24] it’s so many hours it is at least with the other ones it’s almost like a finite end so you’ll you know it’s an open world but you know

[20:33] where the end is where this one you have no clue no because we were going to um hundreds of hours later yeah cause man i was

[20:40] thinking about fallout the other day and i’m like wow i never yeah and you got that one i played i played that a bunch i had a great time

[20:47] with it but like i know we’re even close i didn’t make it to diamond city like within all the with all the hours i put into wow

[20:54] because i just kept finding stuff right exactly that’s the problem it’s like your batman syndrome where you have to complete all the

[21:02] little side quests oh another game i never beat and i i’d get into that again i got back into it i’m like okay i’ll just like you know just like

[21:11] dip in and then i fought bane and i fought the joker and then the game wasn’t over it kept going come on

[21:19] like i did it i did all you wanted what do you mean i had to keep running around but this is probably why a game like no man’s sky is

[21:27] perfect for you right there’s no little little quest markers it’s kind of like on your own

[21:34] terms right yeah yeah well there’s nothing there’s nothing in the game like wait there you go there’s nothing to do

[21:41] there you go and yeah i just like it’s i hate to rely on a internet trope

[21:48] to defile the internet but it’s just like because of the internet we can’t we’re not allowed to have nice things

[21:55] anymore like it’s because even i i wish i’d never seen

[22:01] anything about it like i just got the gate like as in i i wish i got hyped i wish i was excited and it was delivered to me

[22:08] and i was playing it and i love it and i’m just like now i’m happy i’m in my happy place i’m having a great time still having an excellent time with it

[22:16] love the game but just like you can’t if you read anything about it like it’s just it’s hard not to

[22:24] be affected in some way by the negativity around it like you just want to kind of shake some people and say like

[22:30] why are you so angry about this thing like i don’t want to get into the there’s particular baits around people

[22:38] saying like you don’t get it and i don’t know that that’s fair like listen if you’re playing it and you don’t like it man bob’s your uncle you got like that’s

[22:46] your thing that’s your prerogative i don’t mind it as much but just yeah like it bothers you a bit because they’re just it’s like oh you can’t do this

[22:52] you’re like that’s not what this game’s about like it’s not what it’s supposed to be like what i don’t know why you get to

[22:58] complain about that but fine get out there but yeah it’s just so

[23:04] yeah that wash just like the fact that it can’t be people co it can’t be a matter of you

[23:12] know what i tried it i didn’t like it bless you all have a great time but i’m gonna get out of here like it has to instead be

[23:18] just this snowball of rage that keeps getting bigger and bigger and bigger until that’s the story right like the story this week is

[23:27] a huge player drop off of people playing it which again that’s a little bit clickbaity

[23:34] because grand theft auto 5 had the exact same drop-off rate within its second week well yeah because they’re measuring peak to valley

[23:43] for one right and then yeah any new game is gonna not have the same player base at once playing it and then yeah and then there’s other

[23:53] stories where it’s like you know steam and uh playstation are offering some discount like refunds and that just becomes a story and you’re

[24:01] just wondering is that like how much of a minority is it is it really is it a decent number of people is it

[24:08] any kind of majority are we talking like 10 percent of the player base like 70 like what’s the numbers on it but either way it just eventually starts to seep

[24:17] into my happy galaxy this is where you need your vr to like just shut off the world

[24:25] but you know what it reminds me of it reminds me of destiny because in my like that was last year’s no man’s sky to me

[24:33] is like the destiny where destiny was promised to be this huge expansive world and it wasn’t that at first and a lot of people got upset

[24:42] but then they patched a lot of it together and developed the game that they wanted to launch with right i just don’t think sean murray should

[24:50] ever speak he should he needs a pr man because he’s like an engineer right he’ll just promise the world because that’s what he

[24:57] wants it to be the game’s not there yet the difference is like is he he’s kind of being and it ends up being an interesting

[25:05] character and again that’s just part of the thing that like poisons innocent entirety is like the hatred towards him

[25:12] and he’s a liar he’s a thief like he he’s a snake oil salesman and it’s just well he doesn’t speak like that’s i

[25:20] think that’s the problem he hasn’t spoken yet right he’s kind of like i don’t know in a bunker well now he is because but that’s what

[25:26] he said you should do right you just said yourself like you should have a pr and you shouldn’t [ __ ] now he’s not and you’re angry at him

[25:33] well you see dude you’re in the internet you’ve been hung out to dry you want to say something yeah but i i just think

[25:40] about like the thought that he would go he went to all these places and said if you end up on the same planet as somebody else yeah um you’ll be able to

[25:48] see it interact but super rare suckers that’s a lie i sold you as opposed to there is a game breaking bug

[25:58] that he they didn’t because they he didn’t think the numbers would actually work out he didn’t figure somebody would actually see each other or like they

[26:03] wouldn’t whatever like i just don’t think it was like an absolute like hey sean could people actually see each other no but i’m going to tell people

[26:10] that you know like eve like twisting his little mustache in an in an evil maniacal manner in his plaid shirt and

[26:19] that’s like and i can’t obviously like i don’t know like i can’t vouch for him personally because i don’t know the man but

[26:26] just nothing about how it came about seems to me like they were trying to mis sell it and i’m telling you like and my review when you when i first got to

[26:37] play it was i can’t believe it they gave me the game they showed me this entire time and i was so happy and in some ways it’s just kind of like

[26:45] people thrust upon it so many of their own presumptions and that’s been like the bigger discussion is like has the hype

[26:54] was the hype train out of control were they irresponsible and allowing it to go so out of control um and i’m sure i think that’s part of

[27:03] the conversation certainly but man it’s just it’s that’s pr though right control the story you

[27:09] know manage expectations don’t let it kind of go off in its own way and i saw this comment like i saw a

[27:16] comment that really bothered me where we talked to gavin about you know taking out like a

[27:23] silver sword and like slaying all these negative people it was it’s more just like send i think i think if anything else this is all

[27:30] just saddening me it’s definitely no rage just like i’m sad about it and and somebody said oh thank god i read this uh it’s on reddit

[27:38] which is you know really devolved but it says like i thank god i saw this reddit because now i know not to buy the game it’s just like

[27:47] how sad is that because maybe you would be like me like myself like a really good friend of mine that else was super excited for it like he’s absolutely

[27:55] loving it like i’m absolutely loving it and there’s a good section of people who are really all about this game

[28:01] and this guy might have also liked it but it’s just he’s got now wrapped up into that naked now that negative cycle

[28:08] and maybe they’re missing out and it’s just that how that this whole thing has come about is just

[28:15] saddening in some ways ultimately like and it’s not because they’re dishing on a game that i love because i still love it like i’ll probably be

[28:22] playing it tonight check check my playstation i know you will is trevor playing no man’s sky

[28:32] yeah i don’t it’s it’s with any game right like i don’t know i i just i want yeah i just wonder if it’ll balance itself out

[28:41] and a couple patches a couple new features um those who get like in some tiny ways to the people who want uh the refunds

[28:49] like good riddance like there’s some small part of me that kind of hopes and assumes that they’ll

[28:54] maybe buy it again because i wonder if there’s like a similar cycle of destiny although i can’t i don’t think

[29:00] was this destiny was also for pc wasn’t it yeah yeah again it launched a very

[29:07] shallow game i will say like it was a grind fest right and people could break it they were game-breaking bugs it was a mess and then features were

[29:16] added and i think one dlc came in maybe six months later that totally made it the game that they needed it to be right because

[29:24] it was touted as this story-driven multiplayer world and it had very little of that so i think if people treated this as kind

[29:33] of almost like a release like where minecraft was where it started out as this kind of sandbox game and then it grew right with every

[29:41] iteration and patch and um well free dlc added to it it grew into this huge thing that people could play with and it was

[29:50] like well supported which i could see this game doing like all the you know the foundations there they just need more time with it and maybe sony pushed

[29:57] them to the door you know because they’re the publishers or supporters of it right so they needed it out probably before

[30:04] the neo is going to be launched so they needed it like now so maybe that was the problem too and he can’t say anything about that

[30:12] so maybe he’s backed into a corn too and the pricing was a bit weird like i think i think there’s certain expectations when you launch it for the

[30:20] 60 or 70 dollars so the triple-a title yeah i’ve yeah i can kind of go back and forth on that too because like it’s hard to compare one game to an like

[30:31] i can compare you know 60 games so witcher to no man’s sky well i’m not going to do that they’re completely different games

[30:38] one guy you know spent well it was still three years of development and there’s a lot of work in it and a lot of assets and a

[30:44] lot of time spent so i can see 60 bucks and maybe a lot of people will wait until the discount but that’s that’s on them a lot of people do that

[30:53] but i don’t know i go back and forth in that like if it launches a 20 title people would be all over it they wouldn’t care

[30:59] but yeah this feeds into it along with the uh the hype cycle

[31:06] yeah so then i’ll get now you’re on the hate train right yeah yeah i hate this game no like i said i just wish like

[31:14] which i wish i was never part of the subreddit i wish i’d never read anything about it in the sense because it’s just because i’m going to continue

[31:21] enjoying it and it doesn’t take my opinion of it of i think it’s excellent like it’s a great event like i’m really having fun with it

[31:29] i’m excited to see what the future holds with the dlcs and such but um yeah just to know that that exists and

[31:35] that there’s a kind of angles on it to which i don’t necessarily it’s not so much because it’s dissenting

[32:22] thoughts or opinions on this backlash um i think the backlash is a little harsh at the end of the day it is just a game

[32:31] um i agree with there wasn’t really enough effort put out just sort of

[32:38] you know pump the brakes on the hype train they sort of i think as a marketing ploy let it get out of hand um

[32:46] and rather than like correcting people’s assumptions to keep them from having the wrong impression of what it might be

[32:54] they just let their imaginations run wild because they knew that that was gonna you know do its thing um

[33:00] so i think there could have been it might have been good for people to be told to keep like their you

[33:10] know have some sort of grounded expectation or something like that maybe i don’t know

[33:17] um but even then like people’s anticipation of things and what reality is like if a human adult or even a human

[33:26] being can’t deal with something as simple as disappointment then that’s on them you know if they didn’t like how it turned

[33:33] out if it wasn’t what they were hoping for then it’s too bad but like that’s what happens when you buy a game and like

[33:42] it doesn’t turn out to be the one you wanted um the other thing too is that we have people who are just

[33:50] they will pre-order something without taking the time to think about whether they want it

[33:56] um or to let it be you know revealed in its full final form they will they will put their money down

[34:05] and make a gamble and then they’ll blame the house when they lose and it’s like well

[34:12] rather than you putting 80 bucks down on you know don’t put 80 on black before they even throw the ball into the roulette wheel like maybe why don’t you

[34:22] sit back because guess what with video games you don’t have to gamble you can wait you can trust the opinion of reviewers

[34:29] and journalists if you don’t fully um if you’re not like all in when it comes to a particular developer um

[34:39] but at the end of the day like if something doesn’t fully meet your expectations it’s not that developers fault that like they can’t make

[34:47] everybody happy so like you gotta kind of get over it um you could have maybe waited it’s not like these are like collectors

[34:55] editions that are gonna sell out it’s a digital download like there is a unlimited supply you’re not going to miss the boat so if

[35:05] you if you think that there’s any chance of you being disappointed on it and if you’re not emotionally

[35:15] rounded enough to take disappointment on the chin then maybe hold off on buying something until you assess it

[35:24] you know like yeah that’s way too level-headed and

[35:32] that’s basically that’s that’s how i approach my game purchases if if if there’s a game that like i know i’m really gonna like

[35:41] i’ll pre-order it very seldomly but i will and sometimes that kind of you know turn around and bite me in the ass

[35:50] but that oh well it happens yeah yeah like i haven’t done like a soup man like probably like only two or three

[36:01] pre-orders ever and this is one of them but it’s one of the videos i watched of him doing it

[36:08] and the things that he was like he was actually playing a build of it which i can be deceiving but that’s a little bit better as opposed to like hype reel like

[36:16] it’s actually like the developer with the controller like okay well i’m here doing this thing and he lands on a planet

[36:21] and he means over this way and he scans an animal and he zips over here and he learns piece of a language and a little bit of lore for the stuff that happened

[36:28] then he minds a few things and he crafts this one thing and he zips off to this other i’m just like that’s yeah and that’s what i bought and that’s what

[36:35] i’ve been doing and that’s what i’ve been loving um not enough people watched that sort of

[36:39] footage instead they looked at a beautifully manicured trailer and you know it

[36:49] eventually just sort of everyone was expecting the trailer to manifest itself and all these little things that they alluded to

[36:57] but look unless you see it happening it might not happen you know and the same thing happened

[37:03] with suicide squad this year like it’s a movie where they did a trailer for it the trailer was well received but the editing in the

[37:11] trailer changed what the actual end product was going to be because the trailer did not actually represent

[37:20] what the director was making but the trailer got really popular so the studio had the director redo the movie to match the hype

[37:30] and it made for a lesser product so at the end of the day they could have tried to make no man’s sky do everything that it was supposed to

[37:40] but that would have probably broken the game beyond any playable build like yeah sure there’s still a lot of bugs and issues with the game but it’s a

[37:50] pretty ambitious endeavor so fair enough and if you can’t stand having bugs in video games don’t pre-order video games

[37:59] um like wait till it comes out and figure out if it’s stable uh or accept it right like you pre-order it accept it i think

[38:07] i’ve done two i’ve done uncharted 4 and grand theft auto 5. i think those are the last two in like the last

[38:15] four years that i’ve pre-ordered by studios that i trust right so if it turns out yeah uncharted is three for three at that point so like yeah so i’m

[38:23] like it’s probably going to be at least average and above like at least what i want it might not deliver everything i want but i’m going to have a good time

[38:32] with it right and grand theft auto 5 it’s like well i came from four it’s a good sandbox game if i don’t like the story which i really didn’t i could go

[38:40] around and do my own thing so i had fun with it and that’s something again no man’s sky like you could take the path to get to the center or you can kind of

[38:48] bum around from each planet and i’m i’m nowhere close to the center i wouldn’t doubt it your play style i don’t know you’re on the outer limit

[38:57] somehow you went backwards i don’t know man i just thought great it was a great grind where it’s you um to get a bigger ship with bigger

[39:05] inventory and it’s cool looking ships too every time it’s different but you you can either just have a ton of money so you you grind it out you

[39:13] mine and you sell your mind your cell then you go off that way or you can kind of hunt down distress signals of crashed ships

[39:21] and i’ve just been jumping to all these galaxies and going to different planets and finding like all of them and i went from a like 20

[39:29] slot ship to a 42 slot ship now and the thing looks awesome but it’s just the entire every time you land like it tells you a little story about how the guy

[39:37] happened and to get there you gotta like hop do about two or three steps and in so doing you’re flying over the planet so you’re finding a few of the

[39:45] um um monuments and learning more about the culture it’s like a the story of there’s just some part of me too when i’m

[39:52] reading some of these guys not liking it it’s like did you have you read like the story of like the three space

[39:59] races that are in it like it’s it’s pretty sweet like it’s a cool story people don’t read come on see the trailer i want that they play it

[40:09] i didn’t get it but it feels unfair we’re just like man there’s no depth this i’m like did you read anything like that then did you not

[40:16] fall because it changes fine anyways but like that grind was just like oh man so i’m at a place now

[40:22] like i finished i got the ship that i wanted and uh oh that was so phenomenal as far as like just a great experience like grinding through and

[40:30] like finding something to do and now i get to just completely change play style and start to zip around see what’s next which maybe

[40:38] start to head to the middle i don’t know not really not really focus on that going anywhere in the middle there’s one guy who spent uh there’s a

[40:45] story the one guy who spent i think it was like 30 hours on his first planet like you you start on a planet and you

[40:53] gotta fix your ship because it’s crashed and he just never left he spent his first 30 in-game hours there just like kicking around having a great time

[41:03] oh man so the yeah it’s i don’t well great great way to summarize this have you guys changed your last as of last podcast what had you

[41:15] guys said about buying it do i recall that gavin you said you were thinking of buying it yeah i do want to play it um but right now like my dance card’s full

[41:24] i got a few games that i want to finish and it’s like i could buy it now but it’s just going to collect dust so i might as well collect dust somewhere

[41:32] else until i get around to buying it um and ideally a couple patches then by two the one patch sounds

[41:40] he started talking about the freighter patch where you could own it as you’re flying around in space like all of a sudden

[41:45] like these ten or so massive huge ships will fly in and like jeff think of the ones in e valkyrie when you’re kind of zipping

[41:53] around just huge and you can attack them actually pirate them die anyways if you’re good you don’t die

[42:02] anyways there’s apparently this patch in the um eventually you’ll be able to own one of those things

[42:08] and then be able to have like multiple ships in that one so you’re gonna like come into the galaxy this huge freighter like

[42:15] kick around do whatever you want to do but then choose one of your tiny ships hop in and zip out to like the planet yeah or like some like a mobile garage

[42:24] in like grand theft auto right you have your own little starship yeah that’s more like it right the only thing deterring me from no man’s sky isn’t

[42:34] it isn’t the whole hall of blue but people not liking it and whatnot it’s um having a better understanding of the amount of inventory and resource

[42:43] management that the game requires um because like those things are fun but i’m finding myself because of my limited

[42:51] game time now those aspects less and less appealing like even a game like follow where i used to

[42:58] happily just charge through my inventory and figure all that stuff out i’m finding it more and more inconvenient because then

[43:06] like i’ll look at how much time i have and then i just see that and just like okay well you know if i’m going to do chores they have

[43:14] plenty around that house um so that’s the only thing that’s sort of and it’s not a much a matter of like a

[43:22] judgment on the quality of the game it’s just it’s the same reason why like destiny didn’t gel with me like it looks like an amazing game and i’m sure maybe

[43:30] even a few years back i would have totally been all over it but the how i like to spend my time gaming is

[43:40] starting to shift it’s not just because i’m busy like it’s it’s just like my tastes in games are starting to shift and uh

[43:49] grinding isn’t really something that lures me as much as it did um but i definitely want to play the game strictly for the exploration factor um

[44:00] less about the main mechanics of like shoot rocks collect resource build ship shoot rocks collect resource build ship um

[44:09] which honestly like i could see that appeal because it was the same reason i love borderlands which is shoot bandits get bigger guns shoot bandits get bigger

[44:18] guns and i’ve played that game multiple playthroughs uh so there was a point in time where

[44:25] that sort of mechanic really appealed to me but i’m finding at least right now it’s not really one that lures me as much but the exploration factor and just

[44:34] even just to play it and check out a half dozen planets i’m like yeah i’d do that um i’m gonna wait for things to sort of

[44:41] settle for a little bit um also mostly because i just want to finish playing my games uh mad max by the way is amazing

[44:50] um i’m really enjoying that and like that has some minor grinding to it as well but

[44:57] i’m finding less repetition in it um because the variety of different things you can do to grind are very diverse so it’s not just about

[45:07] like fetch missions or this or that like there’s you know you can clear out a band at camp or you can

[45:14] take out a convoy and it’s like all these different sort of things to try to like lower the threat level in a territory which unlocks new things for

[45:23] your car and that sort of rpg grind growth in it the objectives that you have to complete are nice and

[45:31] varied so i find i don’t feel that repetition bearing down on me so yeah i’ve been really enjoying mad max i really want to dig into uncharted

[45:39] 4. um i think once those two are kind of cleared i’ll probably uh look into some no man’s sky

[45:46] it might not be till christmas but uh but i definitely want to check it out i don’t know jeff what are your thoughts no

[45:58] i don’t know it’s not it’s not a game for me um it looks neat i must say it looks neat uh i’ve always been kind of drawn to

[46:06] what’s the other space sim on pc that trev you got elite dangerous yeah i never had something to run that kind of game but

[46:14] just to float through space and kind of discover your own feel your own aloneness in the party of yeah yeah i’ve been telling uh

[46:25] i’ve been feeling a pullback to elite dangerous too that game is also fantastic but it’s just like i can’t i can’t exist in two infinite universes

[46:34] no but it’s my it’s i kind of like i like flower and journey and they were kind of good chill out games so i

[46:42] can see it as that if it was i don’t want to play the price point game but if it was you know a little bit cheaper then maybe

[46:50] i would do it for a chill out game even let the kids play it you want to buy it as a chill game so like to spend 80 bucks on a chill game

[46:58] that’s the same reason why flour wasn’t price pointed at 80 bucks um but to and like with a game like no man’s sky

[47:06] it’s so multifaceted that somebody like trevor who really sinks his teeth into other aspects of the game

[47:15] in every aspect that the game has to offer really gets their money’s worth yeah but for like jeff or myself

[47:23] that price point doesn’t really work for us because there’s a significant part of the gameplay mechanics

[47:29] that aren’t really for us but don’t necessarily need to be played for us to drive enjoyment so i could see how a lot of people

[47:39] will hop onto the game once the price point hits to a spot where they’re like yeah because i’ll pay that much to explore

[47:48] four or five planets and then call it a day like i’m not looking to map the entire universe or find the center of it i just want to fly around a

[47:57] bit and see some dinosaurs and that’s about it um so yeah it’s i could see how there might be a spike

[48:05] in user but yeah i just like just a bluntness of it all just trying to be straight with you nope but

[48:14] i’ll be curious i mean i would like i’m gonna be curious to watch it i hope that the current i’m really hopeful that the

[48:20] current rage calms the developers come around and you know get a couple good patches to fix some of

[48:27] the issues and ideally a couple extra features and then at some point like a price drop maybe 30 40 bucks and then

[48:34] yeah the universe is beautiful again honestly like i’ve been seeing a lot okay like my twitter feed is filled with people enjoying it

[48:43] and the news feeds are filled with people not enjoying it so i have a feeling that a lot of this is the same as the hype machine that sold the game

[48:51] yeah it’s a hype machine that’s selling ad space on blogs because the news blogs

[49:00] yeah majority of players enjoy game it does not uh it does not produce a lot of clicks exactly so i think a lot of this is just pure click bait

[49:09] just typical bleed it leads sort of news mentality and right now like no man’s sky is kind

[49:17] of the the game industry whipping boy and everybody’s having atom and it’s like okay well yeah but there’s a lot of people out

[49:25] there who aren’t saying anything because they’re too busy playing the game and having fun

[49:30] and even the ones who are playing it and just seeing like these nightmare fuel horrible monstrosities of creatures and planets that

[49:38] just are not really appealing but they’re the fun little happy

[49:44] accidents that a game like this will produce so if anything people are finding these oddities and they’re almost like these fun little

[49:52] little mutations that everybody’s noting um but that’s what’s fun about it and that’s what’s fun and interesting about this game and

[50:01] i have to give it that at least is that like this game is challenging a lot of conventions when it

[50:07] comes to games like very manicured experiences and this game is kind of like a very organic experience so it’s interesting to see an industry and

[50:17] a user base react to something that isn’t as polished and shined and manicured for their specific enjoyment

[50:28] you know and i think we’re seeing a lot of uh like pullback of people who are used to like you know

[50:36] like a call of duty or a halo or assassin’s creed or something now there’s anything wrong with those games but they are very

[50:43] targeted to specific audiences and designed to appeal to those audiences because that’s the point like you make something for an audience and you keep

[50:51] that audience in mind and you want them to enjoy it but like with no man’s sky it was i think exploring other things itself and

[50:59] trying to become like a game that builds itself in a way and that i think is i think a lot of people are freaking out

[51:08] in the sense of like well it didn’t make the thing i wanted to make and it’s like you know the developers like yeah but it’s procedural guys like we didn’t

[51:18] sorry you didn’t like the dinosaur on that planet but the procedural like the animal on that planet looked weird because

[51:27] that’s what the code did like sorry you found a weird walrus but you know just have your mom make you some milk and

[51:34] cookies and you’ll be fine it should go a step further and the computer should like access your facebook and twitter and like your

[51:41] internet history and then build those planets there we go metadata collect on you yeah because

[51:49] then people can’t say anything exactly although knowing knowing the vast majority of the

[51:56] people who are probably complaining about this game on the internet if i don’t they were baseless on their search

[52:17] shall we switch to our beers and call us a wrap i think that’s a good idea okay so the um yes i just went totally off the cuff the

[52:26] i was a little bit late picking up anything so the just had to pick up something and as i tend to do it’s always like a really cool looking can

[52:32] like that no no like uh no worry for the taste of it just like oh that one looks neat that’s pretty and it worked out it

[52:41] worked out for me so this thing never had heard it before it’s a blaith brewing crow blight brewing co

[52:48] uh cowbell absent landlord okay absinthe not the beer yeah absent landlord yeah so the uh because the

[52:59] story of it is it’s founded in 1851 as drummond the town was renamed after a wealthy land owner in berkshire england who bought

[53:08] the entire town of plyth sight unseen in 1855. henry bleith esquire never made it never made the ocean voyage to visit his

[53:19] namesake so so this british esquire bought an entire ontario town never saw it in his entire life and now it’s just named after him

[53:30] anyway so they decided to produce beer and this one’s called absent landlord so that’s just a riot that’s great i love that story that’s a fun one so

[53:48] the spitfire aircraft from world war ii and there’s a nice little bit of history behind like the beer was made in honor of that aircraft and its contribution to

[53:57] winning war i think i said like in the aircraft yes yes during that era this was made you can test that you can really taste

[54:05] the the petrol and shell casings yeah so the uh so it’s a country cult which i don’t have much experience with but um

[54:15] delicious it’s great excellent beer a lot of flavor to it so definitely something you want to have like with a meal um not necessarily on a hot day but

[54:22] after work um watch a movie with a meal like it’s a really delicious kind of um the notes are pretty i found the notes pretty

[54:29] accurate if a little bit funny elegant yellow fruits none of those poultry elegant yellow
